Sorry, but I don't think that is possible. The only place I've seen folder trees as you mention is within Regedit. It is not available elsewhere.

you can get the lines back. Install a free program called Classic Shell, and set it to windows XP classic view and your computer will look and act like windows XP. Classic Shell - Start menu and other Windows enhancements

I like the old look. It works with Windows 8 as well, restoring functionality back to the user, with a start button. You can also set it to vista look or win98 look too.

Per pixels303: "Install a free program called Classic Shell, and set it to windows XP classic view and your computer will look and act like windows XP".

I keep seeing this kind of statement all over the internet. I do have classic shell installed, yet when I set it to windows XP classic view, nothing happens. It's not working for me.

as far as I can see, you need to change your navigation pane to windows xp "classic style".

I am not sure if there is something else I did to permit these lines. I don't have another win7 machine to test it on where it was too long ago (over a year ago) to remember what I did. I do however see these lines, and I am very pleased thus far with classic shell....

Now if only a guy could get the same search functionality back from the xp days, as the new one sucks, and the agent randsack isn't integrated into the shell like it was in xp.

I have even used classic shell in win8, even though it took me over two hours to find out how to install software in win8 (broken smart phone GUI with no options) but win 8 had a crippled graphics engine. At least I can still run games from xp on win7 for the most part. Nuf said. If it doesn't work for ya in classic xp mode, let me know, I'll make a better effort to break it to see what I did.

To solve your Agent Ransack problem first:
Go to the tool bar at the top, click "Tools". You will get a dropdown menu with four items. At the bottom of it is "Shell Integration". Click that, which opens up a panel of four shell integration options. I only have two checked, including "Add Agent Ransack to a Folder's context menu options". That's what you're looking for. Now when I right-click any folder, an Agent Ransack icon appears among the context menu options.

As for me, I do have "Windows XP classic style" checked. Still no lines. What I'm going to do is use one of my image backups to revert my hard drive back to a time before I installed Classic Shell. Then I'll reinstall it and see what happens. Right now I'm using a program called "Explorer++".

If I figure this out, I'll post what happened. Thank you for your help!

After you install Classic Shell and set it to "Windows XP Classic" style from Navigation Pane tab of Classic Explorer settings, you must close all Explorer windows and reopen them again to see the lines.

Also, make sure that the add-ons Classic Shell adds are properly enabled. Sometimes Internet Explorer disables them (yes IE is related to File Explorer because the add-in model is shared). To make sure they are all correctly enabled, follow these steps mentioned in the Classic Shell FAQ: Classic Shell: FAQ

I found the last "good" image backup with the tree folder lines and the "+" next to all the folders. Yes, indeed, they are there. I also found the first of the "bad" image backups in which those features are missing. I either installed something or uninstalled something; or tweaked something or un-tweaked something. I have a list of what all I did for each image backup. I've yet to duplicate what I did to mess things up. If I can't figure it out, I will have to do an entire month's worth of computer modification rework to get it all back.

okay, figured it out. My hard drive failed (thanks Seagate) and I had to install from scratch again.
After installing classic shell, I manually opened "Classic explorer settings" from the start menu and then selected the first option "Navigation Pane Style" to windows XP classic. Now, this is also after doing some other view modifications in windows explorer. hope that helps.

pixels303, thinking that I would never solve the problem, I deleted the newer image backups which had this problem. I reinstalled an older backup, intending to rebuild my hard drive from there.

Nevertheless, I checked out your statements. There are two "XP" options and a "Vista" option. Indeed, it is the "Vista" optionif checked—that creates the "sideways triangles" in the folder tree, and removes the "+" symbols. Now I know. Wish I knew this sooner, but I'm thankful anyway, that you figured this out.

Oh, and may I recommend that you get some disk-imaging software whereby you can do backups and never have to reinstall your computer from scratch? Ugghh! What a chore! Been there, done that!

a subject for a different thread.. but Ghost doesn't do a good job any more, especially with win8 file systems. Any suggestions what kind of software a guy could use which supports file extraction (browsing backup files) on the fly cloning to dissimilar size destinations (including ssd's), shows process, allows sizing of partitions and can perform size chunks for backing up onto optical disks? (not to mention without the hassles of having the software report my usage over the internet)
