What would you prefer?

I've decided to go with Avast. And i use to like MSE and Now tbh i dont like... i find its slow at scanning and i hate how it uses windows update to update.

On Another hand... when AVG was instaill it turned windows defender off. And when i instaill Avast it turn back on... should i leave it on or off?

Turn Windows Defender OFF. Use Malwarebytes Anti-Malware as your on-demand scanner.

Mitch i agree with as far as MSSE scanning is slow but i dont keep Windows update on & MSSE update its own database & i dont get updates for my win 7....as far as win defender is concerned you can keep that off & use other anti-malware apps...with MSSE i keep it off bcz it solves both problem & even my OS tells me to keep 1 on not 2, so i choose MSSE....

I also give my vote to avast. i m using it from a long time and its really low on resourse and has great detection rate. another reason i use it because of its user forum. the forum is very active and helpfull. they taken me out of problem few times

I was hoping to try AVG 10 Beta but my data allowance is nearly up (stuck with mobile broadband for the time being).

it is NOT bloated as claimed so often.

Suffice to say I am extremely happy & will keep using it. NO BSOD's, NO false positives & it is NOT bloated as claimed so often.

I just want to point out that as with anything, mileage will vary. I had to reinstall 7 before because of AVG deleting random program files belonging to iTunes and Format Factory. After it deleted the files I got pop-ups constantly from itunes and was unable to uninstall it, or reinstall it. I tried removing everything by hand, and that only made everything more unstable (i.e. BSODs every 5 minutes). It doesn't seem bloated for what it offers but this is a matter of opinion. You might use it for years, and have no problems at all. You might use it for a day, and everything go to heck. But this is usually true for all software.

How is a false positive by an AV user error?

MalwarBytes has on-demand scanning in the free version. It only lacks real-time protection and scheduled scanning in the free version. Any number of members use MalwarBytes as an on-demand scanner once or twice a week.

I've used both avast and avg (not at the same time of course), installed in computers I've sold or cleaned up for customers, and haven't been too impressed with either, as heuristics on both failed to detect any of the fake AV scams but would attack legitimate processes like a touchpad driver, whereas the computers I in which I installed comodo internet security (also free), stopped them in their tracks, but if you're not one of those people who thinks absolutely nothing of wiping a HDD and reinstalling windows occasionally to get rid of bloat and badly uninstalled programs, any AV is better than none at all

Group ... Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware is not an Antivirus software program. It is an anti-spyware/anti-malware program and does not replace an Anti-Virus software program! It is to be used along with your Anti-virus application.
You can either purchase it, or use the free version to scan when you think you may have a problem (or just to check).

Do not confuse Anti-Virus and Anti-malware/Anti-Spyware applications!

Gotcha. Just making sure readers knew that the software did indeed have on-demand scanning. If no one corrected you, then anyone could have read it, and assumed it to be true.
