Installed 7 updates on monday morning

Hi there, I am fairly new to windows 7 running home premium 64bit, and things have been going swimmingly. On saturday I had done a clean install of win 7 home premium on my laptop, updated windows etc. All was good when I shut down sunday night. Monday turned on and noticed the shut down button saying had 7 updates to install, then shut down to install, not restart. Updates applied. restarted system and said that there could be a problem with the consistency of my hard drive and to test. actually crashed there and did nothing. rebooted, again consistency error, then scanned hard drive, no errors, then ran sfc no errors reported .loaded windows seemed normal enough. shut down again and ran hard drive test from within bios, no issues found. restarted windows and checked win update, history says no problems with updates. My hp support guy said that there was an issue with the update and microsoft was advising to do a clean install and not to perform update that failed. I had not done this as there was no failure in the updates. called hp support again, this techy/lemming said he believed that sfc had repaired the problem and to move on. Now today, system went to sleep for about an hour and would not wake, forced shut down and restarted and now back to consistency error and ran sfc again without repairing any files that I can see. Any ideas what is going on?

Go to the website of your HD mfg for a real HD test. If negative, with system restore remove all the updates. Install one at a time (which should always be done, anyway) and use the computer. If sure it is working fine, install another update, etc.

the bios check i did is what hp uses for hdd diagnostics, I restored back to previous to update, went to update changed settings to no windows auto update, and installed one update. no i am trying to reboot but shutdown still wants to install other updates. How to I stop this from happening?

Go to search type updates. Then in the left pane, change settings. Then set to notify not install.

You need the Updates i'm afraid, Try this... Control Panel > System and Security > Windows Updates > Change settings > Where it says select a setting ..... choose what you would like to do. But again, you need updates.

Open Start menu, right-click on Computer and click Properties. This will open System dialog box that will show basic information about your computer. On the left sidebar, under See also heading, you will find Windows Update. Clicking it will bring you to the Windows Update dialog box, now on the left sidebar click on Change Settings. You will now see a window that will look like this:

thank you, will continue. is it always recommended to install 1 at a time, i understand the theory, but wow, last week had 17 updates, :sarc: will need time off work

OK 2 or 3, but not all. If there are restarts that causes conflicts.

My shut down is like that to on my desktop. Theres no shut down except mon the side. Where it says install updates then shut down. So i just click log off....it'll take u to the sign in screen...then the shut down will be in the right hand corner. The REAL shut down.

ok, thanks for the shut down ideas, have restored and re installed updates 1 at time, with programs ran, before rebooting system each time, had no issues with startups, would it have been a multiple install as suggested ? Also may I pick your brain about registry cleaners, do you recommend ? wise registry cleaner , cc cleaner etc. seems like registry gets bogged down over time. I just enjoy a fast smooth system.
