can i format my pc without win7 dvd?

hi,

i got HP DV6 with win7, it worked well for month, but today it suddenly started lagging LIKE HELL! i couldnt open anything until i rebooted with safe mode, then went to msconfig and disabled all the programs, then i rebooted again, it got LIL bit better but still lagging so much
i scanned my pc with anti virus didnt work aswell

so i was wondering if i could format my pc without CD
cuz i got another partition called "Recovery" i thought mabye i can use that?
any ideas?

HP DV6 does not provide the complete model number. Need to know what the complete one is to look for the Users Guide which will tell you how to use the Recovery Partition on the hard drive to restore your computer to it's factory installed state. This will wipe out everything, including your personal data like pictures, E-mail, documents, etc.

On most HP's you tap the F11 key during bootup to run Factory Recovery. Be sure to back up your files first as everything will be overwritten. I would choose to have it format the HD first if you fear infection.

Make your Recovery Disk set first so you have another method in case the Factory Recovery fails when run from boot.

Many tech enthusiasts borrow or locate a clean copy Win7 install DVD for their version to Clean reinstall without the factory bloatware. If you want to try to fix the lag on your Win7 first, look in msconfig>Startup to uncheck all startup items except AV and gadgets. Use Win7 utilities instead of HP factory utilities - the Wireless Manager alone can cause system drag and add 30 seconds to startup.

Use a lightweight free AV like MS Security Essentials with the Windows Firewall. This alone can speed it up a lot. Run a full scan after updating it to check for existing infection.

Clean and order your HD using state-of-the-art free CCleaner and Auslogics Disk and Registry defraggers monthly. I have uploaded these here for you:

Google repeat errors in the Event Viewer>Admin view to see how others have resolved them. Check also the Performance log on Advanced Tools page accessed by clicking through the WEI score on Computer>Properties. Look for cued issues at the top of Tools page, then Generate A System Health Report.

Look in Device Manager to see if any drivers are in (!) error. Check for newer drivers in optional Windows Updates or on the Support Downloads webpage for your model computer or device.

Test your memory using memtest86 CD for 5-6 passes, then test your HD using maker's full HD diag/repair CD scan: Hard Drive Diagnostics Tools and Utilities (Storage) - TACKtech Corp.

Ask back if you have any questions as following each of these steps should help solve the drag on your system. If not we can help you further with Factory Recovery or Clean Reinstall.

and after i closed the pc for like 1hour annd let it "reset" , everything goes well now

Look at the date and time the Windows folder was created, that should give you the install date for the system. Why are you looking for that?

Provide the model number (update your System Specs with it) and we may be able to help you find out how to use the Recovery Partition since F12 doesn't seem to work.

If you have temperature problems, reloading the system is unlikely to fix it.

If you have heat problems laptop, Elevate the rear by an inch to get better circulation. Never use it on a bed/pillow where bottom air vent can be blocked.

It sounds like you are wanting to factory restore, perhaps for more general reasons.

A guy with similar problems several days ago uninstalled Avira using Revo Uninstaller (to get out the hidden REgistry keys and files - don't restart when prompted until that's done). His performance problems were solved by replacing it with MSE, the choice of most experts.

You also dated it as 10/08/2010... So is that August 10th? Cause too soon to be October 8th. And if it was a year ago, one thing I would also do is check the model of that HD. As you stated there was high temp, I am almost tempted to say maybe it might have thermal failure given it is a year old and having a high temperature inside the system, but the only way to be sure is to do some drive tests.

While I have not used Avira or seen what Greg has stated... Check the drivers as well... Something might have messed with the drivers of recent, but I would definitely look at some Drive diagnostics, as I had something similar happen (Albeit, it was on XP and not Win 7) and saw some issues with my system due to the system drive having issues.

yep i been using most of the time on bed ..my bad...
and yes F11 worked im doing that right now ...

and about the anti virus, avira seems the best solution against Trojans (check the hack forums) i guess my safety is better for me .. although some virus may bypass every Anti virus and again avira seems to be the first anti virus to detect it...

If your issue isn't solved by keeping air vents clear with at least an inch of space, then set a restore point to uninstall Avira and at least try MSE.

When you're ready to do this: Back up your files, make your Recovery Disks or save a Win7 backup image of the entire HD first so you have a path back. Audit any Product Keys with Belarc Advisor. Gather your program installers.

The installer is mostly driver-complete, with newer arriving quickly via optional Windows Updates. Any drivers then missing in Device Manager can be found on the Support Downloads webpage for your model computer or device.

Install programs slowly over time to gauge performance after each. Don't let any programs write themselves into msconfig>Startup as they become freeloaders on your RAM/CPU and can spy on you. I only allow AV and gadgets.

Use a lightweight free AV like MS Security Essentials which works perfectly with Windows 7 Firewall.

When it is finished, clean and order the HD perfectly using state-of-the-art free CCleaner then Auslogics Disk and Registry defraggers monthly.

Then save a Win7 Backup image externally so you never have to reinstall again, just reimage the HD or replacement using DVD or Repair CD.

Hence where I got the October 8th, 2010... Either you meant August 10th, or October 8th (As the US convention of dating thins is MM/DD/YYYY, and Given today is 09/07/2010 in US convention... You can't backdate something to a date we haven't even hit yet.

Make a System Repair Disk and then use the Diskpart commands to clean the hard disk and to format the disk. The DiskPart commands are explained in a link previously given but I'll repeat.
