What might cause program icon on taskbar to vanish

Hello to all,
I can use some help in understanding and fixing a vanished program icon. I'm running APC Personal 2.2 on W7 Ultimate 64 bit. Up until I noticed the other day the APC icon which was customized to show on taskbar did and was. Yesterday I noticed the icon gone. I ran it manually and the last recorded event was 9/1/10 and there have been at least one since then. I turned off the display icon and then turned it on an it appeared on the taskbar. Rebooted, not there. Used CCleaner to check startup programs and it showed that the program was listed to start. I disabled it and then re-enabled it and got a pop up from my firewall about it contacting home. Rebooted and it still did not appear.
I feel as if the program is not running until I turn it on manually even though it says it is in the configurations section of the program. Any help/assistance or opinions welcome. Thanks

Usually moving the item to another folder/drive etc

Windows also has an auto disk/desktop clean facility, whereby it will remove icons/shortcuts from the desktop

It could have been triggered by an M/S update!

Why dont you right click on the program icon in it's folder, scroll down to "send shortcut to desktop"

Thanks for the idea. I can get it to the desktop, but I would prefer it back where it was in the taskbar area by the time. Appreciate your time,

How to add program to startup on boot

I contacted them and they had me check in msconfig to see if it was there. It is not. I know the program necessary, I just haven't the foggiest idea of how to get it to start on boot or restart. Any assistance as always is appreciated.

Hello Glennc,

Luckily I have APC UPS installed as well.

You can copy the C:\Program Files (x86)\APC\APC PowerChute Personal Edition\Display.exe (in 64-bit Windows 7) file or C:\Program Files\APC\APC PowerChute Personal Edition\Display.exe (in 32-bit Windows 7) into the Startup folder in the Start Menu to have it to.

If that doesn't work, you can always reinstall the APC UPS software for that model to have it added again.

Thanks for responding. I tried the copying to the Start folder with no luck, and I'd like to not reinstall. So I'll wait for APC to get back with me. If they don't I can always just reinstall the software like you suggested.

I would say the easiest way to fix this would be to reinstall the APC UPS software then.

Sorry, I presumed you already knew - you just drag the shortcut over the Taskbar and "Pin to taskbar"

Specifically on the right side near clock
> right click on taskbar > click on 'Toolbars' > click on 'links'
Drag & release shortcut over links area!

With all your encouragement and APS suggesting the same thing, I did it. I'd like to say that W7 doesn't like me. But maybe its' changing it's attitude. Used Revo Free to uninstall and did a reinstall and reboot. Everything is back up where it is supposed to be. One word of advice to any that must follow this route, copy down the backup times, they aren't reinstalled. I am keeping a record so I can get my electric company to fix the problem. I've had them out twice and since this occurred it hasn't accrued any new data, so maybe they did fix it, like they said.
