Leave On, Sleep, Hibernate or Shutdown

i Shut Down the PC. and when i wake up i turn it on. and why would anyvone want to have the PC turne on 24/7 ?

A lot people have quotas on their internet usage. They may have 10GB of usage between 6am and 6pm and 50 GB of usage 6pm-6am. Therefore they leave their PCs on all night while they download.

I use hibernate if I'm not using it for extended periods. Otherwise I put it to sleep. Never shutdown

Meh, I just sleep mine. Huh - the last time I shut it down was probably a couple weeks ago...I've gone as much as two months between restarts before, simply because Windows Vista and Windows 7 are not XP.

Unless you actually turn it off at the mains (ie: pull the plug) there's very little difference in power consumption between shutting down, hibernate and sleep. So shutting down to "save on power" is a myth. And using sleep or hibernate essentially turns everything off anyway. I think leaving it on 24/7 is not good but using sleep/hibernate has lots of advantages.

Um are you sure about that? The only thing on in the power supply when you power down the PC is the auxillery +5V supply. It's a 5V 2 A power supply, thats only 10 watts. Thats a lot less than what your PC uses when it's turned on.

the monitor turns off on my lappy when it isnt used for 20 mins, but the lappy is on... sometimes if im going out i put it to sleep. the only time i shut it down is when i want to clean the screen (i can see the dirt better when its off and i am outside in the daylight... and i dont want any water related accidents!)

Always turn mine off if leaving the house, surge protector/power switch off.

Main reason the occational power outages here, average once a month, sometimes more, sometimes less. I have a UPS, but still.

two different routines

In our desktop we leave it on other than refreshing boots when needed. However, in the laptop we shut down every night. Didn't have room to put that in the poll

For my PC, I leave on if downloading, if not it gets shut down.
Laptop is always on, or on sleep, because it takes a while to boot and it irritates me.

Thanks to this thread, I had another go at using hibernate again. But the damn thing is like a naughty child, it won't stay asleep...

When you go to bed at night, what do you do with your PC?

I put it in sleep mode, but I usually close down everything but Trillian first. I reboot when updates call for it, and do a full shutdown maybe once every two weeks.

Definitely, shut down and hibernate use far less energy than a running PC. My original point was that people think shut down uses 0 power and that is just not true. The arguement, in my opinion, that "shut down saves power" doesn't hold water.

My PC at work won't go to sleep either. I'm pretty sure it's the wireless keyboard & mouse that's the problem. I'm gonna test it when I get the chance.

Computer is generally left on except when I am going to school

The monitor shuts off itself after 1 mins when I am away from my desk or during the night (when it is downloading something)

Hibernate--Once in a while
Sleep-- Never Ever.

shutdown at bedtime unless doing a large download, have the system set to not sleep until after the download completes. i let the system go to sleep during the day if i am doing something else for a while, hibernation is disabled.
