Leave On, Sleep, Hibernate or Shutdown

I shut down every night only because the fans keep me up. Otherwise I'd just leave it on. What's the difference between sleep and Hibernate? I've never used either.

Um are you sure about that? The only thing on in the power supply when you power down the PC is the auxillery +5V supply. It's a 5V 2 A power supply, thats only 10 watts. Thats a lot less than what your PC uses when it's turned on.

When you shutdown the PC it's still using around 2.1 watts (same as hibernate). Sleep mode uses around 5.

OK, I re-read the original post I replied to and agree with you. Compared to hibernate or sleep there isn't going to much difference in power consumption versus turning your PC off. MY 10 watts was worst case scenario. My original thinking for some reason was compared to being on and running. Too much caffeine at the time I think.

Sleep, as I understand it, keeps what you were doing loaded into the RAM with just a trickle charge of electricity being used, whereas hibernate , again as I understand it, loads what you were doing onto the hard drive instead so that the trickle charge to the RAM is not necessary.
The basic idea behind both is to allow you to resume whatever you may have been doing, without having to go through the boot-up process.

I may not be 100% correct on the exact terminology involved, but I think that is a "Cliff Notes" type summary of what they are. If I am wrong, then by all means, somebody correct me.

It depends on the computer:
Main Desktop - sleep
HTPC - shutdown
My Laptop - sleep
Wifes laptop - Hibernate
Windows Home Server - shutdown
Ubuntu (2) - shutdown

I have a few "Puters\Lappy's". I leave "Bertha" (main Win7 PC) on 24\7 and only reboot when required. The only time she gets turned off is during heavy Thunder storms. My other 2 PC's are on demand PC's meaning that I only turn them on when I need them then turn them off when I'm done. I have 3 Laptops of which 2 (Win7) are turned off when I'm not using them. The 3rd Laptop (WinXP) is for downloads so it stays on until downloads are complete.
