Defrag sticks at 64% when analyzing ?

When I try to defrag/analyze my C: drive...the system freezes at 64%. It will stay there for an hour if I leave it alone ?

Have attached a jpg shot.

Other drives in the system analyse/defrag without issue.

I have run a complete disk check at system startup...and it appears to complete OK.

What would be causing my C: drive to freeze at 64%...and how can I correct this ?

Thanks BFK...but I've posted numerous threads with numerous screenshots previously on Seven Forums...and this is the first time I can't get the upload screen...also...when I click on your link...I get the same empty window with the IE8 spinning little circle but nothing loads ??

1) Defrag stalling may be due to insufficient free space. Do a disk cleanup.

Delete files using Disk Cleanup

2) Run an SFC scan.

3) Run defrag in safe mode, if it completes, it could be a 3rd party driver issue. In that case, you'll need to do a clean boot procedure to identify the culprit driver.

I just clicked this link and it opened right up.

Thanks again to all. Got the defrag working...but still can not get attachments screen on Seven Forums to open...also...still get a blank window on the BFK link as these screen shots show...

Since I can get to any other site on the net I've tried I don't think it's a problem on this end ?

Is there someone or someplace on Seven Forums I can forward this issue to ?

If you've already run chkdsk ( with the /r switch hopefully) on the filesystem and there is no improvement, then the HDD may have a physical problem. Worth running the HDD diagnostic utilities available from the manufacturer and/or something like HDTach to check disk performance.

Windows defragger is slow as molasses, inefficient and not very informative about what it's doing, but it still shouldn't hang during analysis if everything is functioning normally.

If the HDD scan doesn't help, then one more thing to try would be a anti-virus/malware scan; there is an outside chance that the analysis is getting stuck on an infected file.

If none of the other suggestions work.
Get Defraggler and run that, then run Windows defrag again.
This used to happen in XP as well, but a quick run of Defraggler or Auslogics Defrag should fix the issue.

Yes, being out of disk space will be the biggest issue.
An extremely large file is another issue.
A corrupt file may also cause this.
Defraggler could help determine both of those issues.

The other thing you can try before defraggler is,,,,,

Delete the USN Journal (yes it is safe to delete this file, but you should not need to do it often)
Open an Administrator Command prompt
Click Start / type CMD and then hold CTRL+SHIFT and hit enter
Then type the following

fsutil usn deletejournal /d C:

Then reboot.

I am not saying this will resolve the issue, but it is worth a try.

Defrag can take a long, long, long time.

My suggestion:
Just before you get ready to go to bed, start defrag.

And then you hope that by the time you wake up the next day that defrag has finished.

BFK..wanted to let you and/or powers that be at Seven Forums that my issue with the blank pages is an IE 8 issue. Tried both Firefox and Safari and no problems...something in IE8 is failing when I try to access a new page from a link within a current page ?!
