Solved 0x80070005 error searching for Updates

OK... my turn for some help, please

WIn 7 Home Premium x64
SP1
Last updates installed 11/1/12 (the full set of Patch Tuesday updates)
Last successful check 15/1/12
Every attempt at checking for updates currently fails with an 0x80070005 error
I tried using the infamous subinacl 'fix' - and get 'subinacl not known' even after uninstalling and reinstalling it.
As far as I can tell, the registry entries are OK anyway.

The Fixit that I get from following the guided help fixed two items first time around - and didn't fix the problem.
Second time around it fied one problem - and that's where we end up in a repeat situation - it fixes one item every time, but fixes nothing in terms of results.


Any more info needed - let me know!
Any advice gratefully received.

BTDT - Indexing isn't even installed, according to the Services control panel (If someone wants to give me a proper name for the service?????)

I haven't done the Accesschk thing (yet) - mainly because the thread made it obvious that they didn't have too much of a clue

Yes - but there's no option to disable it (it shows as 'indexing complete, BTW)

I tried stopping WIndows Search in the Services console - but that had no effect

MSE - it's the only one installed since I banished the OEM's trial of McCrappy together with the removal tool - back in October

So does that update as normal because those updates usually show in Windows Update when you click on Installed Updates.

Type in the search index and you should have a index option click on it and in the lower right their should be a pause button. Is that their?
Can you go back to a restore point?
It wouldn't hurt to run sfc /scannow. Have you tried it from run as admin. Some times that changes for what ever reason.

to answer your questions.... the Pause button is greyed out - presumably because Indexing is not actively doing anything anyhow

(@Joan - MSE is updating normally. The listing of updates in the History shows no problems getting them - but they don't appear in Installed Updates anyhow<g>)

I must admit, I haven't done the resets - I'll do those now and report back in a few minutes

In the end, the only thing that worked was renaming the SoftwareDistribution folder - which I was *really* trying to avoid, but at least things are all functional now.

Nah - I don't think so, as I ripped it out by the roots as soon as I originally booted the machine.
I suspect that it was just my footling around in there a couple of weeks ago that broke it :huh:
