my laptop has an ati x1600 mobility card and is outputting via hdmi (mini dvi-actually) to an ASUS VH242H (full 1080p) monitor. When I had this connected running xp I had not problem with the screen resolution and size, but now that I'm running windows 7 the 1920x1080 resolution is available, but the picture doesn't fill the whole screen, there is like a 1" black box around the displayed screen.

I believe it has something to do with my display driver, I'm currently using the one provided by windows update.

How to
» Catalyst 9.3 w/ Mobility Modder? - Page 2

This task is no small feat. It has been performed successfully, according to the How To link.

Using the mod tool I was able to install the catalyst control center 9.8, but after the driver installed I kept getting a bunch of driver errors, and I could not select a resolution higher than 1024x1280.

So I'm back on the windows update ati driver and I just realized that using 1680x1050 fits the screen perfectly, so I guess I'm stuck with that until more support is added for my card (but I'm not very hopeful that they will even release an updated driver that resolves this issue, and other issues I've heard about with playing games).

Yes, you have to adjust underscan.
In Catalyst, choose graphics-desktop&displays, then you have to right click on small monitor and choose configure. In attributes enable gpu scaling, in scaling options set 0 underscan.

Thank you so much!!! That was exactly what I needed to fixed my problem.
With the las Catalyst™ Control Center (2011.0104.2155.39304) you hace to go to "My Digital Flat-Panels", then "Scaling Options (Digital Flat-Panel)" and set Underscan to 0%.

I had the exact same issue and I was hoping it was not a monitor issue. Yes I realize this post is old but it should be stickied!

Many thanks to emil1964 and patriciols for finding the solution!

Problem qith 16:10 1920x1200

Hi,
I'm facing quite similar problem but this solution doesn't work, I'm already at max scaling option !

I've HD Radeon 6950 and a pc monitor 16:10 1920x1200.
Last AMD drivers and Catalyst suite installed.

Using the HDMI output I can't have fullscreen there is black borders up and down : I just can choose 1920x1080 maximum.

Using DVI output with VGA adaptater, I can choose 1920x1200 and I've fullscreen.

I'm wondering if a HDMI cable has specs for ratios or resolution ? It's written : Aspect Ration 21:9 and Resolution 3840x2160 4096x2160 ...

My Card and Windows Seven see my 16:10 monitor as a HDTV ! but it's not.

And moreover for this card it is said that the max output resolution for HDMI is 1920x1200, but I can't figure out.

What is the reality ?

Thanks for your answer !
