Hey everybody,

I went ahead and installed Win7 on an old Dell 4550. Its graphics card is a GeForce4 MX something something... the standard VGA driver is currently installed and as i went on nvidia's website, it said that i have the optimal driver installed already... downloading the vista and win7 drivers of other (higher) models didn't do it...

I've gotten as far as the 1600x1200 resolution by unchecking the "hide modes that this monitor cannot display"... that way i could select 1600x1200 but not 1680x1050 which is my monitor's default...

i'm stuck... help is appreciated!

Hey.

You are unfortunately out of luck. The latest driver for your card is for XP. This means you will never have Aero. You really should upgrade to run Windows 7 with any kind of performance or (video) usability at all.

Here is a driver for your Gforce4Mx with a modded inf. This driver should give you Aero with proper resolution, at least you should have the best chance with this one.

ForceWare 97.46 Windows Vista (x86) download from Guru3D.com

Get outta here. Nice find for him. Didn't even know that was possible at all. Still may not have enough video RAM for though for Aero. Still, better than nothing and maybe even full.

Right click the card in the device manager. Browse. Let me pick. Have disk. Browse. Now find in C:\NVIDIA somewhere the .inf and double click on it. Hit ok. Hit next. Let it install. Reboot. Enjoy your driver.

Pick an Aero theme to attempt to have Aero interface.

I have never heard of a 15.4 inch monitor that supports 1680X1050?

According to the Sony web site, your lap top is made to run 1280X800 resolution. Click in marketing specs in the link below, it's in Adobe format.
Sony eSupport - VGN-FS940 - Manuals / Specs / Warranty

This also sounds about right to me for a 15.4 inch monitor lap top, unless I'm reading something incorrectly here?

Check out this resource, you may find something to work here: Windows 7 Compatibility Center search results - GeForce4 MX graphic card.

well... it looks like my model is not listed... mx 420 isn't, but a few of the higher ones... i thought all the MX series are somehwat the same and don't really matter when it comes to something like this, since i believe this is a driver issue....

i just did that again and it didn't seem to work... 1600x1200 is still the highest resolution i can choose from... aero doesn't work (if aero means the transparent window frame interface)

OK I was wondering why the large resolution with that lap top.
22inch should work at 1680X1050 for sure cuz thats what I'm running now.

If you have the nvidia control panel you might be able to set up 1680X1050 using the custom resolution settings.

Ok I did a little more digging on this. I found another old XP driver that was made with HD support for older cards and does have your card on the products supported list. Hard to say if it will work with Windows 7, it might give you the option to install in compatablity mode.

ForceWare Windows XP/2000 32-bit

or perhaps these posted by Torrentg awhile back.
http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_2k_93.71_2.html

Also these have HD support and have been used successfully with Windows 7 and your card.
