1GB 550gtx ti card issue?

Hi guys,

Basically i bought a new computer, and decided to update the graphics card, i purchased a 2gb 640gtx (if im remembering right) and it didnt seem to like my computer, at this point i had a 280w power supply. Basically the screen would continuously flicker even with the newest drivers. So i took it back stating it was faulty although i have a feeling it may have been my psu causing the issues as 280w is pretty low. I changed it for a 1gb 550gtx ti card and purchased a 400w power supply as that was what it recommended. I installed the new one and everything seems to be peachy. However i have found in windows that whenever im playing media, and this is any media from music to videos my screen will turn off for split second then back on. As its carried through hdmi it takes the sound too. When i play games they are perfect with high resolution and the screen doesnt blink unless it goes to video cuts screen not in game cut screen. So im completely lost as i cant find any previous threads stating a similar problem. Any help?


Also I used microsoft online checker and it says my card doesnt support aero but i clearly have the transparent effects which doesnt make sense. Am i having a driver conflict or something?

Well Your Psu still isn't enough the minimum is 400w?

you should atleast be using a 550w PSU

you have to figure in load and potential Overclocking

any highend card especially a 6 series gtx is gonna need atleast 550 to 600w to work properly underload and Pc power consumption remember the video card isnt the only thing in that case that needs power you need to up it that is probally why your getting this

your maxing out the PSU

I would think a 5 series would need atleast 500w to run corretly with the unit

I have a GTX 560, running on a Corsair HX520 PSU (4 years old), runs absolutely fine.

eVGA (www.evga.com) recommends a 400W PSU or larger with at least 24A at +12V. Does your 400W power supply offer that? If not, you may have gone too cheap on the PSU.

I doubt that's the problem, though. I've never used HDMI as a monitor connection on a PC, but I've read of lots of problems with that. (Not your problem, though.) It sounds annoying, although it apparently has little effect on the functioning of the PC. I hope that someone can assist you with that.

What power supply are you using?Maybe it doesn't have enough volts on the 12v rails. Also I would go with 500watt psu to be safe because you never know when the system could spike the voltage and with the extra watts you are more likely to be safe and give your graphic card and the rest of your system a lot of breathing room.

I guess it makes sense, its just weird that in games its perfectly fine, not flicker or anything, its only when it goes into media such as music or video that the screen blinks.

It is quite likely that the PSU is the source of the problem. Although it is rated at 400W, unfortunately the available power is spread over multiple rails. For simple systems, using on-board graphics or cards that don't require an additional power connector, this is probably adequate. With the card you have, the PSU isn't likely to be able to supply sufficient current through the additional power connector, particularly when the card is under moderate or heavy load.

Multiple rails used to be the way to go, but for system stability I recommend single rail units.

I agree with Solarstarshines.
A 600 to 650 quality power supply. If you buy the minimum required and do gaming you are working a lesser power supply very hard. That creates heat and a poor volt and amp signal that no computer likes. We are talking just a few more dollars. You would be working a 600w power about it's mid range right where it likes to work. Plus it gives you room to grow. Brands I trust are Antec, Corsair, Seasonic. Don't cheat you or your computer with a cheep o power supply. Everything in a computer start with a proper high quality power supply.
