Solved 1tb HDD only shows 523gb

what the hells wrong with it couple weeks ago it was fine then i tried making a partion but it didnt work but now its like this how to fix it?

Have you run a checkdisk to look for errors on the drive?

No need for the second window, it is reported to be 523GB at the top of the disk managment console.

Try shrinking and extending the partition again. You should get the right values back. (just use windows default settings when shrinking and extending)

i get this unfortunately, will try to scan for disk errors now since it did not let me shrink it

When you tried making a partition, did you actually make a Virtual Hard Disk instead?

Also when you tried resizing, did you use 1. the wrongly reported C: in the top pane, or 2. the Partition listed in Disk 0 in the bottom pane. I would recommend trying it from 2.

Also please let us know how running "chkdsk /f" from and elevated command promp went, were there any errors?

didnt get any errors on check up and it dont matter which one i click one it wont let me shrink it or extended it , says same thing and extend is grayed out.

I can only stab in the dark.

Try an sfc /scannow from an elevated prompt to see if you have any bad system files. If it corrects errors, run it again till it finds no errors.

Download the hard disk utilities available from your drive manufacturer and see if it passes those tests.

The problem is, that working on this C partition can result in total loss. It would therefore be imparitive to make an image of the partition before we get started. Do you have an external drive large enough to place all that data - seems to be like around 400GBs worth. If we can do that, then we could proceed.

ok that method did find errors but says its unable to fix them so im going to post the log here ,did it 3 times still same message so ye like i said heres log but will continue to give it a go to see if it finds more ''

There might be someone around here who can properly analyze that CBS log, but you should take WHS's advise and make an image of the drive or otherwise preserve its current state because it is obviously rocky for some reason.

At a minimum, I would copy any personal data files on it to another drive if you have not already done so.

i could possibly send some of it over the network to my fathers pc and save some of it there well aleast some of the important stuff, im going to have to wipe my hdd aint i

Try this: Open a command window with administrative privileges. Then type diskpart.

Once DiskPart is ready, type list disk to identify your harddisk by its number (we'll assume it's 0, though it may be different. If so, use that number for the following commands accordingly.)

Type select disk 0. Now follow up with list partition and, as before, select the C: drive by typing select partition 1. (Another way to do this is with list volume and select volume <number>).

Here comes the clou. Now type extend filesystem. What this command will do specificially is to check the size of the partition, and match the size of the NTFS filesystem to it. This is very useful if a partition was resized without correctly adjusting the filesystem as well.

This command should only take a moment to execute and is completely safe (and yes, it also works on the running Windows system). When finished, exit DiskPart with exit and then close the command window.

Now check the size of your C: drive again in Explorer. Did it work?

I think you are right. It will come down to reformatting the disk and reloading everything. With an image that would be easiest. But if you can salvage your data, reinstalling the system is no rocket science either - just tedious because of all the updates you will get. And then you also have to reinstall all our programs.

PS: Just saw what Corazon posted. It is worth a try. This is an old Server 2003 command. Let's hope it does not muck things up. Backup your user files first.

ye i just hate the idea of having to update all my programs takeing up the net and my games like bfbc2 which last time took around 2hours to update since it was over a year of updates :/

That fixed it thank you very much dont have to reformat now

saved me money and time also dont have to go buy a usb stick to transffer my files or try to transfer over my network to the other pc now
