hi guys ,
i installed windows 7 pro a week ago and everything is working fine except for these problems :

1- the video quality is good but not as good as before , and i tried to install THIS update for my driver but i got this message ( the NVIDIA setup program could not locate any drivers that are compatible with your current hardware.setup will exit now )

2- there is a folder in local disk C called windows.old , is it safe to permanently delete that folder ?

3- every time a try to shutdown my computer i get this message :
( waiting for the programs in background to close
windows logon
force shutdown cancel )

and sorry if i wasn't clear but English is my second language .

1. The reference Nvidia drivers won't install on Nvidia video cards in Sony laptops. not sure what other models have the same 8400M GS in them, but thie drivers here,

Drivers | drivers for mobile cards and laptops | laptopvideo2go.com

should install as the INF has been modded to install on any Nvidia mobile GPU.

2. Yes it is. That folder is created when Windows was previously installed and you don't format the drive before installing Windows 7, and contains everything from your previous Windows install. It can be removed by running Disk Cleanup and select it from the list. Before you do go through and double check for any file/pictures/documents/etc that you might have forgot to backup, then remove it.

3. Most likely caused by a program or driver (or possibly lack of proper driver) not shutting down properly. Does it by chance say what is hanging? Check in Event Viewer. If you can't determine what it is you can use this,

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/717-shut-down-speed-up.html

to force it to shutdown faster.

As for Item #3 note that if you lower the "WaitToKillServices" value too low seen in the guide there that can also attribute seeing more frequent "waiting to close programs still running" type messages when going to shut down or simply restart. the idea lowest runs about 1000 and even lower to 800 for that tweak where some may still be seen depending on how many programs and active startups you have running.

Other then that how is the new drive working out? I saw your other thread at http://www.sevenforums.com/installa...-huge-problem-when-upgrading-windows-7-a.html

May I also suggest. If you do have a windows.old. Install it again, doing a clean install, per the tutorial that I already gave you. All here know that is the best for problem free enjoyment in the future.

How did you get a Windows.old folder if you clean installed to a new HD per your other thread?

I am on the WIPE and DROP full fresh install instead of upgrade band wagon, tales of Vista upgrade woes are all over the place, don't be one.

It's fortunately not too hard to deal with once you backup anything that concerns you.
[Bookmarks, pix, documents, game saves, etc]
Easiest if you have 1 partition for OS and rest of HD as 2nd., only have to wipe the one.

Go into Computer Management in 7, then Disk Management (under Storage) within the app to see what your HD situation is and can do some limited manipulation there.

He has other thread that says he did fresh install? Interesting...

richc46 did that ... thanks ;)
stormy13 i tried to download from the link in #1 but the driver didn't work
Night Hawk replaced the hard disk , did all kind of tests for it and now it's working great : )
gregrocker there was two options ( upgrade , custom ) i chose the custom but i didn't find the advanced setting option so i just completed the installation without stopping.
i know now where i went wrong( i didn't do the installation at boot) but how can that be any different from the clean installation? because i found just one new folder after installing the windows ( windows.old) and i deleted it. and that's exactly like option 2 in THIS thread.

so, is it better to do a clean install again ?

Did you boot the Win7 installer or run from Vista? The Custom>Drive Options to Delete partitions, create New, and Format will only appear when you boot the DVD.

As long as you didn't do an in-Place Upgrade, then it's probably clean enough especially with the new HD.

Check optional Windows Updates to see if any newer drivers have been delivered. Then check the Device Manager to see if any drivers are missing or in error. If so, find them on the Support Downloads webpage for your computer or device model. Try the video driver from there, too.

As Stormy suggested, check the Event Viewer>Admin View to google repeat errors to find a solution. Also on Advanced Tools menu (accessed by clicking through WEI score link at Computer>Properties) check the Performance log and Generate a System Health Report.

^^
1-I run it from vista .
2-No windows update available , i tried update every single driver in the device manager and their all up-to-date.
3-I'm already using the video driver from vaio's website .

Back up and do a clean install. The little extra work now will make you much happier in the future.

I get that on 2 of my 3 Win7 systems. I always thought it was because of the SSDs being too fast which are on both systems but I never gave it much thought because there seem to be no negative consequences.

You can reinstall Win7 as often as you want to the same computer, or even migrate retail version to another computer of your choice as long as it is on only one machine at a time.

With a new HD I doubt you need to wipe the HD first which will also require doing one of the workarounds given in the tutorial to install Upgrade version to cleaned HD. Just use Custom>Drive Options from booted DVD to delete all partitions, then partition as you wish, format and install - or let it autoformat.

How did you get a Windows.old folder if you clean installed to a new HD per your other thread?

On drives already partitioned and formatted and not simply allowing the 7 drive tools and installer to create new 100mb system reserved and primary partitions the 7 installer assumes an existing installation is being replaced even when none is present.

I saw that with the RCs as well as on the first build when using GParted to take care of the partitioning.

With a prepartitioned and formatted drive you won't see the 100mb reserved space taken with any fresh install however. That's only seen when using the MS drive tools option while booted from the 7 dvd during the installation.

1. For Image backup I found free Macrium to be the easiest, fastest and most reliable. And I have tried quite a few imaging programs. Have a look at the link (tutorial). I am sure you will understand in no time.
2. BitDefender is a decent AV program. I personally prefer NIS2010, but that is a personal choice.
