3 USB dongle connected but cannot display websites

My new laptop is a Toshiba L500 Satellite with Windows 7. I tried using my Three dongle (which I have had for 3 months now and works perfectly fine on my old laptop with Windows XP) - it managed to install and connect as normal. But it wouldn't display any websites other than the Three home page, supposedly because it is an internal website.

I then spent hours on the phone with Three and Toshiba technical team, trying to change some advanced internet options, turn off firewalls etc but nothing changed. Three then sent me a new dongle apparently with compatible driver. But it's still the same.

The weird thing is when I check the network and sharing centre - connections are fine. And when I ping websites like google on CMD, no packets are lost. The connection is there but something isn't right.

Can anyone help???

Can you list the model number of your dongle?

Another option that i see the company offers, would be one of their "Mifi" devices. That would allow your laptop to see it as a normal wireless signal. But that would be a matter of last resort, I'm pretty sure we can get this working for you.

Can you please open a command prompt, and type "ipconfig /all" and send a screenshot of the results. Do the above command with the dongle connected, be sure you can get to that internal site.

Make sure your "Three" dongle is connected to the "Internet" before. Then please post the output of that command (it's up to you whether you send a screenshot, or you copy the text).

That's where your problem lies. Can you do this:

ipconfig /renew

Or just disconnect, unplug, replug, reconnect, see if you can get that "Default Gateway" filled out.

The subnet mask is also wrong, it most likely should be
subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
gateway: 94.40.189.1

You can manually change both of those settings, by going into "network and sharing center", then clicking on "change adapter settings". Right-click on the adapter labelled "PPP adapter 1.3G", then click on "properties". Click on "tcp/ip v4" then click "properties", you can then change the two settings on the window that pops-up.

No operation can be performed on Local Area Connection while it ha its media disconnected.

All these while I had my dongle connected and internal site working.

Correct, it could be something entirely different. But, its worth trying my suggested settings. Either way we now know the adapter is not setting its gateway and might not be setting its subnet mask correctly. I dont know how either support department could have missed this.

Yes, acaoruccio needs to "release" then "renew" (It's been so long, I forgot these simple things...).

And I am not sure where in that pop up window I change the Default gateway or Subnet mask?

First try just changing the gateway, then click "ok" and try browsing the web.

I've right clicked into 1.3G Properties and found "Internet Protocal Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)" under Networking, then gone into Properties. But I am not sure where in there I can change the gateway.

Once your on that screen, click advanced at the bottom. Then click on "add" under the "gateway" heading. and type in 92.40.189.1

acapriccio, from what I see here... Your best chance would be bringing your computer over to "Three"'s customer service building (if such building exist), and ask the Tech Support guys as of why their DHCP server doesn't give out a "Default Gateway" to your connection, put the computer in front of them, and do your thing , connect to "Three"'s network, and show them that you don't get a "Default Gateway". That will give them enough information to process your complaint.

If your dongle works on other computer... We can assume either the DHCP server is sending malformed DHCP info, OR the driver for your dongle might be screwed...

If they can't get it to work, I suggest you get them to swap out your dongle for one of their "mifi" devices and you can use that with your laptop.
