32 bit -to- 64 bit system and OS

Anyways. It's this simple. Her machine is good enough to be a 64bit system but it's not. It is a 32bit system with a 32bit vista OS on it.

That is what i am trying to see here and get opinions on. The fact of what would be better, easier, faster, cheaper to do.

To get it to the point of running a 64bit win7 OS on it.

I know a 64bit OS will not run on a 32bit machine. That is why i am saying this and posted this. To see what would be better as said.

Basically to see what all my options are to make this work some how.

Besides the obvious choices to either just keep it at a 32 system and run or buy a new 32bit win7 OS on it -or- (what i would have to do to upgrade it to a 64bit machine??) to upgrade to complete system so can put a 64bit win7 OS on it. -or- to try and run mine on it with the key already being in use. s i also have a 32bit win7 OS upgrade disc.

This thread has me all confused now. When it started out to be a pretty system thought / idea / question... ( I thought!! )

Can you post what the machine *IS*? The exact CPU type would be sufficient, or the complete model number if it's a commercial system (HP, Dell, etc.)

Most, but not all, PCs support the X64 extensions.

Alternately, download and run the Upgrade Advisor on the machine. It checks for both 32 and 64 bit compatibility.

If it turns out to not to be X64 capable, that'd be the time to seek advice on how to upgrade it. (Seems unlikely. CPUs that don't support the X64 extensions are usually found in old or weak systems.)

This is a very confusing thread. With all the argument it is totally not clear what can and what cannot be done.

First of all, the upgrade option, according to the Microsoft web site

Windows: Windows 7 Upgrade Option Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

can be used to upgrade Vista to an *equivalent* Windows 7, i.e. Home Premium to Home premium. But this refers to machines bought in the second half of 2009 from participating vendors. Not sure if there is the same limitation for Vista licenses bought before July 2009. According to Kari, there is not.

covers most issues of upgrading, whether you have 32-bit or 64-bit system.

The way I see it, if you want to go from 32-bit Vista to 64-bit Windows 7 - and assuming you have a 64-bit processor, which is simple to check, I guess all multi-core Intels and AMD64 are - then you will need to do a clean install, namely all user data will be lost, so please back up everything before starting.

However, from the marketing point of view it will still be an upgrade, i.e. you will have to pay less for the license based on the fact that you have Vista already. In fact, if you qualify for the Upgrade option program I mentioned above, the upgrade is free - but you have till the end of the month to order your copy.

Finally, you will have to obtain a new license key for the new Windows 7 installation - either through the upgrade program or otherwise. Your key is already tied to your hardware and if you try to use it on your friends machine it will be eventually rejected.

That process that i see in the photo is 64 bit handling.... You can put Windows 7 64-bit on there.

This is your processor athlon ql-64


Here is the thing... You can use yor friends 64 bit disk and install windows 7 in that computer but you will have 3 days to buy a key or windows will lock up or be very aggervating till yu buy a key

you can use your key from your friends or your computer ... lets just see how well that works out.

i am not going to tell you what to do or not to do but you should listen to what most of these guys wrote in this fourme

lol.. Yes Thanks. i already know that with the processor and posted that her stats was good enough and compat to run it.

I was moreless talking about everything. Not just her processor. Meaning gfx-cards, sound and everything. Not only that but mainly just thoughts and ideas of people what they think would be better to do in general .

This thread got all confusing. Plus when i first posted the first couple posts i was going and wording myself by what she was telling me only bout her system. Then until i digged deeper and got the exacts on her system and what she all wants to do. cause was trying to make this same thing happen and work for a couple different systems of hers at the same time. (not of the idea of using my product key tho) .. but just basically installing the win7 64bit and seeing if it would run ok on all of them.

If you run the windows advisory.. it will tell you that you got issues becuase you are going to run 7 on a vista... of course becuase dumb people at microsoft does not put that into consideration. They shold have a database with all the products and hardware that are compatible and pull from there...but nope...

I would just run it and hope for the best and when you do. do a clean install. don't do the update, better performance.

When the companies build these computers and put a 64 bit processor in a computer. Just out of the blue they are thinking that maybe some of the cosumers might be upgrading to a 64 bit OS becuase if you go over 3.2 gigabyte of ram... thats the way to read it. Then they are going to have to put hard ware it it that will have 64 bit drivers for it...

So, I say back your stuff up and go for it. How else are you going to learn without trial and error right?

Sorry everybody.

This thread got pretty confusing and messed up. Plus was more of a post to get different thoughts and idea's from people / everybody for myself on what and how i could do different ways (if needed) or idea's maybe to get it to work the way i need/want or the best really. With all hardware and what need or should be changed out. Not just processor.

To see what ways would be best to completely switch WHOLE system to a 64 or if others thought be better or cheaper to just stick with 32bit kinda so to speak.

Plus as said just above here. As in first couple posts i made here i was going by what she told me about her system without exactly knowing here exact stats but i pretty much already knew and figured it could cause i did know it was an HP with an AMD on it. I own one of almost the same So i knew it was a 64bit processor but system showing as a 32.

So to clear this up.. Get my thought back straight and on point..lol.

So like example: Hers is a 32bit vista home prem OS, machine processor is 64bit. So is compat and good enough there to run a 64 win7 OS. But.... Now what about the rest of everything. and i mean everything.

That's basically what i was trying to get thoughts on and what would be better and cheaper way of doing it to get it to it's best so to speak running a 64bit system and OS and ALL hardware..?

Hope that clears it up. My thoughts on this one are lost.. Confusing myself even with this easy crap. I know what i am doing AND I know what i am trying to say. I guess just not coming out right.

Underneath the computer shoudl be her direct model and then go into the drivers section of hp.com and see if anything comes up. I am sure your not the first one to come up with this question.

With all due respect. It's not about me learning as i dont really have to learn on that degree as i already know what i am doing. It was more of a "hey has anybody tried this and will or will it not work or best way to do it" type of post. So yes, it was a technical question on advise with way may be better on doing it. Also.. None of your answers has helped or gave any insight. Those are all common since thoughts you have given. Please don't answer or post with common since already known facts that have already been done. This was a hypothetical question and/or advise post. Not for a direct question really so to speak nor to ask anybody to do work for me or research.

Also just so you know. Not trying to be rude but, Those above post was not really directed to you and your above posts. It was for the ones above you and me as i edited and relinked the main 1st post and my last post i just made here. So everybody would know and it be cleared up, worded kinda better and right and ended.
