32 bit vs 64 bit Comparison

All in all after I experienced ~3 wks of heartache, I now have a very usable 64bit Win7 system.
  • Canon MFD - printer function worked but I had to liaise with Canon support to get the photo & CD print to work on 64 bit OS;
  • NVIDIA driver caused intermittent problems eventually obtained Win7 64 bit version drivers;
  • BitDefender antivirus complained something about 'incorrect OS' error msg;
  • One of my Spanish apps won't work at all in 64 bit;
  • I had to spend money to upgrade a DVD authoring app I extensively use... etc,..,,.,.
....but now all is good..... (except for the dreadful Win 7 explorer)...

How do you explain this?
By "runs slower", do you mean that it starts up, or actually performs over-all slower? It's hard to know unless you let us know what utility it is, and also, your system specs (i.e. are you running a x64 OS with low RAM, etc.), or it could be that you're expecting it to run way faster and it just simply won't so you are thinking that it's slower. Anyways, the more info you provide the better. Or, it might be that it really is slower haha!! :devil:

it's doing something with files. maybe my files aren't 64 bit. how can i know if it's because of the startup or actual performance? i run it in the command window. by the way, just realized! how can this app be 64 bit if it's running under DOS?????

The command prompt, and DOS, are very different things. I think the last version of Windows to include DOS was ME.

Gr8 post!

I was thinking this nu rig was a 32 bit, then - had to look it up because that didn't sound right, for some reason. And lo and behold - it's a 64! :doh:

You will find that most new rigs coming out will generally lean towards x64 simply because x32 is handled by x64 for Vista and Win 7. As Lord Bob pointed out, it is rare for any programs not able to work under x64 that is written for x32, only the really old legacy programs which most companies have abandoned in favor of new systems and coding methodologies as well as just taking advantage of newer technologies to make up for the need for 'tight' code, for the sake of expediency.

I think the only time you will see systems running on x32, it would be on lean, older systems or systems where you know you can't really meet the demands. Usually places where you have existing hardware but not the budget to upgrade the hardware a bit more, just the OS due to environment requirements. While processors shouldn't be a problem for 3 to 5 year old computers, nor should memory, the time invested in a replacing parts of hardware and OS is more expensive than just simply using an image that will work with the hardware as well as possible legacy issue (Although if you have legacy programs... You would still have problems due to possible changes from OS and software implementations, as I have come to learn where there is a company that still has to use a Windows 95 machine for their out of date, out of product support program they still want to use.)

great post, you should also mention that ~50% of all windows 7 copies sold are now 64bit, and companies such as DELL only provide 64bit OS. Personnally I haven't had any driver related issues, when I swith to x64. Almost all hardware from the common manufacturers, released after ~2006, have 64bit compatible drivers

This is a comparison of x32 vs x64, therefor market shares are not consequential.

Glad you liked the thread :D
