4 TB Hard Drive not Registering on Computer

Hello,

I just built a new computer and everything is running fine with Windows 7 Pro with 64 bit. Service pack 1 is updated. My SSD drive is working fine. When I hooked up my 4 TB hard drive it was not showing up in the computer setting. It is connected (BIOS) and working fine.

Windows 7 has not prompted me to do anything with the new Hard Drive.

I right clicked on computer/Management/Disk Management and saw the Disk 1. I then clicked on it and made it GPT and it shows as this now in the Disk Management window. It still says it is "Unallocated" in the window to the right of the Disk 1 box. It also says it is "Online" under that.

When I go to computer it only shows my SSD. I've restarted multiple times.

Any ideas?

That`s because it`s still unallocated, you must create a partition/s out of it, then windows will see it and let you start using it.

It can be done in Disk Management or you could use Partition Wizard.

Yeah, there is a problem with volumes over 2.2GBs. Siggest you split it into 2 times 2GB.

I am a little curious. Can you please give full details of your 4TB drive, Manufacturer, Model No.etc., so that I can check it on the web?

I am now assuming you have connected it as an internal drive. If it is an external drive please state so.

If it is a new 3.5" drive, it should have come formatted as a GPT initialised drive and should show the full 4TB when you connected to a SATA port in the motherboard without your doing anything. But you said you made it GPT. Was it MBR then? A 4TB drive could not be an MBR drive unless you had taken it out from a 4TB external drive.
So please confirm whether it is an external drive or internal drive and post the screenshots of how the drive looks like in Windows Disk Management and also MiniTool Partition Wizard.

Note: If it is an internal drive, you can initialise it as a GPT and if it shows full 4TB you can partition it as you like. You can have as many as 128 partitions. No necessity to split it into two 2GB partitions.

From what you're describing it sounds like you've connected your second storage device – a 4TB HDD, then went to Disk Management, initialized it in GPT and that's it?

After initialization you need to also partition and format it. The GPT partition table will give your system the opportunity to read and present the drive with its full capacity, all accessible, but it also needs to be specified as partition size(s) and file system, most often – NTFS.

After these, assign a drive letter that is not in use and the drive should be ready to go in My Computer.
