64 bit install

Hi there,

I purchased Win 7 install discs at the weekend. I was running XP and therefore needed to take the clean install option.I had recently upgraded my system so that is was 64 bit capable. However my DVD drive would not recognise the 64 bit Win 7 disc on multiple attempts, een though I ensured I was booting from the DVD drive.

In the end I installled Win 7 32 without any trouble. I've since taken advice and I think the problem may have been that I had 6 GB of ram installed when I attempted to load Win 7 64 bit. I am advised that sometimes the extra ram causes problems loading Win 7, 64.

I now wish to retry loading Win 7, 64 , having removed 4 GB of ram which I am advised may help this loading problem

My question is: Can I load Win 7 64 from my Windows Home Premium disc (now that I have win 7 32 installed) or must I, as Best Buy guy advises, reload XP and go from there to Win 7 64? He says I cannot go from Win 7 32 to Win 7 64 with this disc.

OMG...the Best Buy Guy recommended you go back to XP and then do a clean install?

1)Don't listen to those "tech" guys at BestBuy...
2)Come here and ask us first...were the best on the internet
3)Place the Windows 7 DVD in the drive and reboot->clean install
4) You have to do number three...you can't upgrade x86->x64 but you can do a clean installation

I've now read the tut.

Unfortunately I am no further ahead. Despite cutting my system back to 2GB, of ram , I can't get my system to boot from the Windows 7, 64 disc. I 've taken this disc back to Best Buy and they tested it and said they can read it no problem.

However on boot ,with the disc installed, the system absolutely fails to even recognise it. I keep ensuring the ststem is booting from the CD drive

When I try to activate the disc manually , the error message reads:

"This installation disc isn't compatible with your version of Windows. To upgrade, you need the correct installation disc. For more information, check your computer's system information. To install a nw copy of Windows, retart (boot) your computer using the installation disc and then select Custom (advanced)."

As I've said in earlier posts over the last 48 hours , I have installed Windows 7 32 without any problems from this set of discs that I purchased.

Do you agree that is possible to use Windows Home Premium (the upgrade version) to go from Win 7 32 to Win 7 64? Or should I reinstall XP and try to go straight from there to Win 7 64.

The system appears to meet all Win 7, 64 bit requirements.

The m'board is an ASUS P5E Deluxe. Its less than six months old and I haven't attempted to update the bios because that is probably beyond me.But do you think that could actually be an issue?

My gut feeling is that the 64 bit disc is not booting properly on startup. I am sure I have managed each time to ensure , using the , F2 key, to set the boot priority so that the system is booting from the CD drive.

Could there be possibly be an issue with the CD drive - tho it seems to read everything else.

One other niggling thought: When I took the disc back to Best But y'day and asked the geeks in Geek Squad to check it, didn't actually see them test it but they said it was fine.

On Saturday a poster on this site suggested I see if another computer could read this disc. So I shoved into my laptop, a four yr old Lenovo that absolutely does not meet Win 7 64 specs.

It did give me the same error message as quoted above......my niggling thought is that maybe the disc is actually a dud. Nah couldn 't be...but, do you think...?

I had this same exact question, with almost the same words, in another post. The poster said that he was booting from the DVD, I sort of pushed the fact that all the symptoms appear as he did not. Make sure that BIOS is set to boot from DVD.

Lets start from the beginning. What did you do to ensure that you are booting from the DVD and not the OS?

All your symptoms indicate that you are booting from the OS.

You could reinstall, XP, but for almost everyone else that is not necessary.

The conflict, is due to the fact that you are going from 32 to 64, so you must boot from the DVD.

You were both right- I had indeed messed up the boot sequence.

I should have rembered the old saying before I posted about this problem:

"Type in haste. Repent at leisure"

Anyway win 7 is now runng sweetly in 64 bit.
