64-bit or 32-bit...how do you know???

Hello all,
I want to upgrade my windows Vista ultimate 64-bit to a windows 7 ultimate 64-bit, but when I go to the windows store there is no option to choose between 32 and 64-bit. How do I know I am getting the right one?

I did go to Newegg, and found this version significantly cheaper, is it the same thing or should I stick with buying from Microsoft? At least it says it is 64-bit...

I have also been seeing some posts about windows 7 64-bit giving a black screen on start up... What is that about? Is it an issue that I should be concerned with?

And one other thing, last one...I promise, should I buy the full OS or just the upgrade?

Hi and welcome to the forums

Buy the OEM version you reference from NewEgg, much cheater and it is the full version. Keep in mind that you will not get any support from MS when you buy a system builder copy. But you will always have this forum to help you when needed.

Have you ran the MS upgrade adviser to ensure that your hardware is supported; most likely it will be since it is running on Vista.

Not sure what to say about the "black screen" on start up.

If you purchase the OEM version, it is the same as any other version, with the exception that you cannot use it in more than one machine. Once installed it stays in that comuter regardless of what happens.

If you buy from a legit dealer, you will get two DVD's one is for 32 bit the other is 64 bit. You can use either one.

You can buy just the upgrade. It is much cheaper and it is the one that I would purchase, in fact I did. It is very easy to install. If you have any problems, just come back here and we will give you step by step instructions. In fact, you can read the instructions now in our tutorial section, under installation.

The black screen is a problem on some installations with the 64 bit, but there are potential problems with 32 or 64. You back up your hard drive first. If there are problems you merely use your copy of the hard drive and you are back to square one and then you try to install again. Please if you want 64 bit, do not be hesitant because of potential problems. 32 or 64, you may experience problems.
