Solved 64 bit updates succeed 32 bit updates fail

My windows updater asks me to update and I agree. Then time after time it tells me I failed.

I had a surprise when looking at my updates that all 32 bit ones fail and all 64 bit updates succeed. That seems to be the pattern. I provide attachments. I note many important updates fail and that worries me.

I ran the fix it troubleshooter.
Any ideas on resolving the update problem?

Hello and welcome robaa mate I don't know why you are getting the 32bit stuff someone cleverer than me might know.

But a little tip I learnt yesrday is to download smaller batches of updates - when they come up untick them all (top box) and then tick a batch at a times and you might need to get the readiness tool

Download System Update Readiness Tool for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB947821) [November 2012] from Official Microsoft Download Center

Ah I see most of it is Office stuff - oops - still the same thing goes I just did a Vista a machine with the same problem - Office updates.

I tried the hotfiix you suggested, a huge download of half GB. I thought that must sort this out. But problem unchanged. Current updates still not installing successfully.

Try this robaa > Start > type cmd > right click on the small window (command prompt) > run as admin > in the small black / white window type sfc /scannow > hit enter.

Takes a few minutes to run but may show up any problems with the install. See my pic (mine is blue / white and different font out of choice)
Oops yes that is a space between sfc and the /scannow

Sorry I should have told you. I ran scannow, seeing that advice in earlier post. I rang CHDSK also. Nothing found. I can see from the update history that this problem has been there probably since I got the computer. The failures go back 1 yr, but that is as far back as the update history goes. Computer 18 m old.

Hum we do have a litlle dilemma here Rob I take it your name is Rob if not my apologies. Mate I have just checked my own copy (box) and the bar code sticker on the end of the plastic container has
"Office Home & Student 2010 32bit/x64 English" printed on it.

Nowhere can I find that it is a solely 32bit or 64bit version and a Google came up with this
Choose the 32-bit or 64-bit version of Office - Word - Office.com now assuming as far as I know that 32bit apps as a general rule can run very easily on 64bit sytems - even if the version you have there is 32bit it should still run perfectly ok on your machine, and which the refenced link also states.

Now why the updates are not installing is a worry from the security point of view and also is the system not recognising your version as genuine perhaps??

Now while you have the 2010 Office on board maybe it would be worth saving the data in Docs or whatever you have done with 2010 onto an external drive of some sort and then uninstall 2010 and reinstall it. Maybe just maybe the install has become corrupted by whatever which needs a proper fix such as what I am suggesting you could try.

Now if that corruption is virus based then you will need to scan the storage before you put anything back on the computer at least that again is what I would do in any case (my security does this as a matter of course). Plus a reinstall will porbably get rid of anything that has attached to the programme - I stand to be corrected.

To unistall it use the free Revo app it is a buit more thorough in my view than the Microsoft one as it scours the registry for remnants.

Download Revo Uninstaller Freeware - Free and Full Download - Uninstall software, remove programs, solve uninstall problems

Once you have done this try doing the updates again BUT do them in small batches not as a whole crowd of them to do that untick the top box and then just tick say 20 at a time to install.

That is what I would try and if this problem persists then a call to Microsoft would be in order.

John

Yes, Rob is correct name. The measures do sound a little too drastic for me although do make sense. I have 64 bit WIN 7, and office 2003. Many of the programs are 32 bit and run fine. Under control/performance information it says "64 bit operating system". I cant see what office has to do with this, wouldn't it be more a windows issue? I probably need to reinstall windows to solve this, but I have 45 programs and it is just not worth the time to reinstall them. This may be too tricky to solve.

Ok Rob Mate I meant just the Office program not the whole shooting match - sorry if I gave that impression:o please don't go reinstalling the 7 that is way too much.

Having said that that 2003 is getting a bit long in the tooth and is why the updates are not installing because if you notice the updates are all for 2010 Office. Your version is probably no longer supported.

Maybe you could find a cheap 2007 edition mate I don't know where in the world you are but out here in Oz you can pick them up from retailers from around $26 like that is giving it away, and sorry again cos I thought you had 2010. The docs and stuff created in 03 will still open in 07 as I had it myself and my old docs are all usable.

Wherever you are just Google Microsoft Office 2007 and you will almost certainly geta plethora of dealers selling that version. To be frank it is just as good as 2010 and I only put 10 on my machines as the person I was asked to installit for declined  just before I put it on so I thought well may as well use it. Now it costs a fair bit more than 07 but like I said the 07 is a very acceptable product and you will get support (uppdates) for it.:)

An alternative is one of the free Office programs like Open Office but I am not ken on them to be honest again.

Rob,

You say you have Office 2003 but the updates that are failing are for Office 2010.
I don't see any updates listed in your screen prints for Office 2003.
Check your Windows Update history to see if you have been getting Office 2003 updates and if they were successful.

Did you buy a PC that came with the Office 2010 Trial version installed?
If so, did you install Office 2003 without uninstalling Office 2010?
Based on your specs I can't tell if you have a Pre-Built OEM PC, Custom Built PC, Self-Built PC, ...

In Control Panel > Programs and Features, what do you see listed for "Microsoft Office ..." ?
(Do you see Office 2003 and Office 2010 listed ?)

Hiyya David mate from what I can gather Rob installed 2003 for himself from his old XP machine. That is why I said what I did re getting 2007 instead because I am pretty sure there will not be any support for 2003. My laptop has 2007 on it and it loads updates for it (2007) by default and I think the system is getting it wrong on Rob's new machine which I think is his build..

Hi John,

I don't have Office 2003, so i can't check Windows Update History to be sure about this.
I did some hunting and found recent Office 2003 updates, so I think it is still being updated (supported).
Here is one example with a publish date 12/10/2012
Download Security Update for Office 2003 (KB2726929) from Official Microsoft Download Center

Rob,
Can you check if got this (or any Office 2003) update around 12/10/2012 ?
Hiyya mate I can could have checked at work a while back but they have since upgraded the 03 to 10 on the XP the department is still running - yeah I did say XP so I might fire up my old Dell XP tomorrow and see what the go is with the updates.

I guess Rob must be in nodland right now as we haven't heard back from him.

Many thanks for your explanation. I can now see why my computer security is falling to bits, and why 32 bit updates may not get loaded. Unfortunately I am wedded to office 2003 as 2007 has big macro language changes, and I have 200 macros. I checked update history, and was surprise that there were many office 2003 updates. But many more in 2011, then 2012. I think the best I can do is just download the 64 bit updates and hope for the best. I add attachment.

Hum good luck Rob maybe there is a way to convert those macros (I really don't know much about them to be perfectly honest) to a version of 2007 or 10 I hope so mate cos the 07 I really prefer to 10 myself.

Maybe time to start over again:(

As a thought I wonder if the Open Office could do something along those lines it's free and if you tried just one of the jobs and it doesn't work then you haven't lost anything but some time i suppose eh?

That is load the macro into an Open Office app then see if that will transfer to a 2007 folder / file.

Anyway a post in Microsoft Office and / or Software / Tutorials in here might be worth a shot:)

Rob,
I believe the Office 2010 updates fail because you have a Trial version that was never activated, and was not uninstalled.
The easiest workaround for you is to hide Office 2010 updates as AddRAM suggested.
That way they won't keep trying to re-install, and filling up Windows Update History with "Failed".
You should review your Update History after each Patch Tuesday to see if any Office 2010 updates failed, and hide them.

End of life (Extended Support) for your Office 2003 is April 8, 2014
Support availability for Office 2003 and Office 2000

Also, you are referring to your Office 2003 updates as "64 Bit".
That is incorrect, and may cause confusion.
There is no legitimate 64Bit version of Office 2003, that's why it doesn't specify 32Bit or 64Bit.
With Office 2010, there are 32Bit and 64Bit versions, and it seems you have the 32Bit version on your PC.

Hope this helps,
David

I had office 2010 pre- installed with computer when bought. I dont remember any trial. Then uninstalled it and installed office 2003. And installed onenote 2010, that was a trial, then bought it.

I can hide Office 2010 updates and that should be straightforward. Thanks.

Thanks for the update!
To me, it's a bummer if MS is trying to install Office 2010 updates you don't need (because you have Onenote 2010?).
As long as you are OK with hiding these Office 2010 updates, that's cool!

Its okay. Good to know that there is no more serious problem here. I will keep tabs on the updates and hide them as needed. Thanks for all your help.

A bit of a joke if you ask me Rob just get a copy of 2010 you can get that from
http://www.officeworks.com.au/retail/products/Technology/Software or http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=375_1025&products_id=14437 < $115 + shipping but I would hazard a guess you would be near an Office Works outlet

The 2007 editions are a tad more than it unless you just want the standard edition but heck for $120 it would save an awful lot of grief.

If you are wondering I can open old 2003 docs from a stick I have then saved on so there isn't a problem there.
