a download problem with firefox v25.0

I am running a Gateway MD2614U laptop OS Win7 home 32bit. The laptop and Win7 are working just fine. Firefox v25.0 work's just fine except that Firefox can't download anything. Firefox was downloading just fine until a week ago. I have tried many diffirent file types. Firefox reports download completed without any errors but the file downloaded can't be found anywere on the hard drive (I did an in depth search of every last file on the hard drive). When I download the same file in Internet Explorer the file downloads just fine to the dir were it was supposed to go and will execute just fine. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling Firefox. I have tried turning off add-ons, extensions and plugins. No good still the same problem. I tried Firefox in a different Windows profile, no go. I tried Firefox in a different Firefox profile, still no go. I tried running Firefox in safe mode with network running to see if ZoneAlarm was the problem, still no go. I tried a restore to an earlier date. That didn't cure it ether. I still have the problem and I am out of ideas as what to do next. I could use some help please.

Hi johnsmith45jock, I got the download working again by doing the following.

Reset the download folder
In the Location bar, type about:config and press Enter.

The about:config "This might void your warranty!" warning page may appear. Click I'll be careful, I promise! to continue to the about:config page.

In the Search field, enter browser.download.
If any of the following settings have a status of user set, reset their values to the default value. To reset a value, right-click the setting and select Reset from the context menu:

browser.download.dir
browser.download.downloadDir
browser.download.folderList
browser.download.lastDir
browser.download.useDownloadDir

The problem is back again

I think I got it solved. Firefox is now downloading again. Only time will tell if this is a perm fix. I did the following step below: I changed the "browser.download.manager.scanWhenDone" value to false. I have been reading reports about ZoneAlarm messing with the download and with live streaming txt chat on Firefox.

Disable virus scanning in Firefox preferences

Firefox launches your installed antivirus program to scan files when they finish downloading. In some cases this can cause a substantial delay or downloaded files may not be saved after the scan completes.

1. In the Location bar, type about:config and press Enter.
   
   • The about:config "This might void your warranty!" warning page may appear. Click I'll be careful, I promise! to continue to the about:config page.
2. In the Search field, type browser.download.manager.scanWhenDone.
3. Double-click on the browser.download.manager.scanWhenDone setting to change its value to false.

The juice is not worth the squeeze of settings,
