I have a usb number pad on my Gateway md2614u laptop, os Win7 home 32 bit. Normally in a chat prog, a text prog (like word) if you type " alt + 0176" you get the degree sign. Why won't it work with the usb number pad?

Yes on the number lock key. I can't find the exact Ebay sale that I got the number pad from but this Ebay sale number 400465658151 is a very close second from looking at the picture.
I have a Gateway laptop model 2614u. Os Win7 home 32bit. How do I enter a Windows ascii code on a laptop with no built in number keypad? I tried using a generic usb keypad that doesn't have an ALT key. I can't enter the ascii number using the laptop ALT key plus the usb keypad.

I finely stumbled on how to punch in the ascii code using the generic usb number pad. You do it the same way as if the laptop had a built in number pad on the internal keyboard.

The way it works is. 1, The number lock on the generic usb number pad is on. 2, hold down both the alt key and the fn key down wile typing in the ascii code on the generic usb number pad. Then let go the alt and fn keys and the item that goes to the code that was typed will appear next to the cursor.
