A Silly Question.

Well, my question is if in Windows 7, DirectX and video codecs have to be installed by the user just as in Windows XP, because as far as I can see, some movies can be seen, and I haven't tried games yet.

wmp supports more codecs now, even xvid as far as i can tell.

I haven't had to download any codecs but I installed VLC Player and I think that comes with a whole bunch. Does anyone know if it installs codecs for all players to use or is it that only VLC is able to play files?

VLC is running great on mine but i have not loaded all the differant types yet. ill try later and let you know what codecs wont start

i do remember in vista with both VLC and Media Player Classic installed i still had to go find a very old codec for 1 file. but that was it only 1 file.

While a lot more video formats work OOTB, it may be worth d/ling a codec pack anyway. The codec quality in both WMP and VLC just doesn't seem to have as good a picture quality compared to Vista+codec pack.

It could be driver related though. (haven't installed a codec pack in 7 yet)
