I've looked for my password.. I found what I think it may be.. I just wanted it to put with my e-mail address for this site.. I never have to log in here..which is great..I try to keep up with these important items. but during this new laptop stuff.. I cannot recall it all.lol.. frustrating..

Hi LPT

In order to remove the Free software that you do not require I would suggest that you download Autoruns from Sysinternals (they're part of Microsoft so it's safe ), so that you can control what runs when you start the laptop.

Autoruns for Windows

This software will allow you to control what starts when you switch on the laptop, It also allows you to switch things on and off as required so you can try things out before you commit to anything

   Warning

This is techie software so does look a bit scary - don't worry , properly used it's the best software for the job

The file comes as a zip file containing 4 files double click on the zip file and then on th Autoruns.exe file, (no need to install anything, so you can click ok on any prompts about extracting or UAC)

Run the file and you will see a lot of information presented



your laptop will show a lot more that the image I show as mine has been pruned quite heavily

- select the startup tab (1 on the Image)

Check the list of titles (2 on the image)

for anything that you do not want to run on startup click on the arrow on the left of the row (3 on the image).

You may receive a prompt about admin mode for some entries click to OK this.

when you have clicked on all the items that you want to remove close the autoruns and reboot the laptop.

Once you have run the laptop for a few days with the new settings you can run autoruns again and right click on the items without a tick and select delete to remove them completely - once they are deleted here you can use the uninstall in control panel.

If you need help choosing what to remove you can post a screenshot of the autoruns output here and we'll be able to suggest things

NON hi.. I never did the activation to the McAfee Security.... I started then a Wizard of some kind.. Check pc for errors.. thing.. I let it run for a few.. then stopped it..
Wasn't sure what it was.. an icon is on the lapto still.Also a MemTurbo4 wizard kept trying to tune my pc.. Don't know what that's about so closed it too...then a Advanced Registery Optimizer 2010 is trying to get me to do that also..seems it is a deep scan thing.I don't want any of these programs.. I will remove them ..
When I can get the router.. desktop and the laptop all talking to each other tomorrow I'll try to get the Laptop online..and get things working that I want on here..
Somewhere along here I NEED to let you all know I have a disc for my Wondows OS in the mail to me.. for this LTop as it was when I received it.
Do I still need to do the .. thing Dave57 said I should do once I get on line.?.. right now as tired as I am... I can't recall the name of it.. supposed to see what all is on my Ltop.. for use later on.. in case I have to revisit it as it was from the day I received it.

Well, anyway looks you have prefered Avast, so as you better not run two AV, you'll have to uninstall Mc Afee from the programs. Those are part from bloatwares manufacturer, and if you decide in another way you'll be able to reinstall mc Afee one day, or another software you do no need at the moment.

Dear LadyPinkTomato...Looks you decide the complicated way straight from the beginning!!

Maybe should you try to get use to the laptop before removing all the apps you want, so you'll have better control over it!

I have used .. Revo-Unstall.. in fact have it on my desktop now.. used it for quite some time.. however I'm sure willing to change if your suggestions are better for me to do... since I'll be here asking for more help along this path with the Laptop

I always suggest the use of Autoruns (or the Microsoft MSconfig) to disable the start-up, of pre-installed software bloat, as it allows you to temporarily disable loading the software.

This means that you can run your system for a while and ensure that you really don't need it running. At the point that you are sure, you can use revo to fully uninstall the software.

It's always usefull to keep a copy of Autoruns available as many programs that you actually may want to run such as adobe's acrobat reader, will load a start-up program to help the program load faster, a nice idea but you slow down the start-up of the system everytime for the slightly faster start of one program.

Barman thanks again.. I'll go download the sugggested program to my desktop.. Just not install it ... or should I go ahead and install it?
If I have it on my desktop I can drag it into the ACER folder I've created to make sure I'm using what's on the Acer Ltop... on it .. This is a 64 bit Laptop..

I still can't seem to get the hang of connecting my Laptop and my Desktop to this router and moden../ power supply.. that I've found satisfactory.. part of the problem may be MSN is doing something on their side..
Is there a specific way to do these connections?
.. the Belkin router came with a yellow cabe to use..a power adapert/power cord item. I did that..I seem to get lost after disconnecting my Desktop.. from the Modem/ power/and the Pc tower..( the desktop) that part I didn't have trouble with.. It's the reconnectiong each end of those yellow modem/ router/ desktop ethernet plugs and where they go that has me baffled..( I've read and read... the Belkin quick guide for the) Belkin...Enchanced Wireless Router - N 150...info that came in the box..the Ltop is WI-FI...the Desktop isn't.
I hope I've made this clear.. if not ask.. I'll try to give you more info.

I'm NOT about to let this baffle me so much that I give up..that's just not in me...

First - there is no need to install autoruns - just store it where you can find it if you ever need it.

Second - the connections on the back of a wireless router are variable but normally would provide a power input socket and a number of network ports - as the cable supplied was yellow there should be a yellow identifier on one of the ports. This should be connected with the supplied yellow Cable to your DSL modem. the connection to other wired devices (like a desktop) should be made to one iof the other (often green ) connections.

Nigel.. hi.. YES it has both of the ones you mentioned.. so I should use the Yellow cable that was supplied with this Modem for my DSL modem...to connect the end of that yellow cable to the YELLOW modem port.. on the Router ?
Then there are 4 other ports that are gray.. to add more cables as needed.
Ok let me see if I have this correct..
1. Un-plug the yellow cable from my Modem.. ( that's there now)
Add the yellow cable that came with the Router to that port..

2. Connect the other end of the yellow cable to the yellow port on the Router?
What plugs back in the modem that's connected to my desktop Tower ?.. or will it need to be connected.. ?

Remember I'm connecting 2 pc's together on ONE DSL connection. ( the Laptop and the Desktop ) along with the Modem and the Router.

Just asking .. because I want this to work for both of these pc's.
I will NOT do anything till I hear back from you.

to use the router to share a connection with more than one PC

DSL Modem connects to ISP connection and via the yellow cable, (supplied with router) to the yellow port on the Wireless Router.

Desktop PC connects by cable, (any color (even pink )), to one of the Grey ports on the wireless router, Normally port one but not essential.

Laptop connects by cable to any of the other grey ports or via wireless

Thats the basic connections done

Correct me if I'm wrong here but surely you don't need both a modem and router together for your connections, the desktop and laptop would both connect to the router as I believe it's a combined wireless and switch, it's all done with the one box.

Hi Joan,

Depends on the actual set-up - a standard wireless router will not have the connectivity or modem function to connect to a telephone socket, (RJ11), or to a cable feed., so you will need a modem to perform this connection that this then fed into the router.

You can get combined Modem/Wireless -Routers that combine the functions (the BT homehub is one I think), these are needed to replace the old USB modems that were the norm a while ago.

The standard modem will now have a connection to the ISP's supply RJ11 or Cable plus an RJ45 connection to be connected to a single PC. To share a connection you need to replace the single PC with a router which is as you rightly say is a combined switch and wireless router

On a technical note the wireless part of a wireless router is actually another port group on the switch

Thanks Nigel, I just mentioned it because I've never had 2 separate boxes for my broadband even before getting my Home Hub, my other router was a combined one that did both.

I seem to remember that LPt mentioned a Belkin Wireless Router.

Personally I prefer the modular approach as it allows for mix and match installations and if one component fails you don't have to replace everything, (or go without everything until it's fixed), It's the same with any type of all in one Hi-Fi, DVD/TV Combos. Printer/Scanner.

Hi I'm back.. The reason I have so many seperate items is that.. I've had this DSL/Att/yahoo modem a very long time.. no doubt when it dies.. they will send me out a better version.. up to date one.. in all fairness to everyone..
I'm greatful for the questions too.. I'm learning along with each of you..
plus I'm so greatful I have such great patient help on this..
I'm off to get this completed..then get a scan or whatever it is that I need to let you all see.. what's now of my Laptop..... now that I've removed a few things.. added some also..
