Adobe's free page and Windows 7

Some of you may know that recently Adobe put up an older version of their software, CS2, for free downloads by anyone. There seemed to be a lot of confusion about this both from those downloading it and from Adobe going back and forth saying that it was a mistake that the page went up, etc. But after all of that the fact remains that the page is still up.

Now, if there are companies with "proprietary concerns" then Adobe certainly ranks as one of them so I find it a little difficult to think this is merely a negligent oversight. One of the speculations is that CS2 was "let go" because it's an older (2008) version not supported anymore to a more "commercially" plausible explanation that it was released so those who already had licensing could re-use it elsewhere. Somehow none of these add up because as I said the page is still up.

Anyway, I went ahead and downloaded it and if Adobe has a problem with that then they're going to have to explain to all those downloaders - quite a few by now I figure - why there was a page on the Adobe website freely accessible by anyone but also how that page also gave a universal registration number to activate the software.

Aside from all that I was wondering if anyone here who uses Windows 7 has downloaded PSCS2 and if it works on Win7. I still haven't activated the downloaded setup because of mention around the web that there were problems like freezing, uninstalling, etc.

So, if I decide to go ahead and activate but those compatibility issues arise is Win7 able to uninstall this with the least hassle? It would be nice to have a version of PS again but I don't want to go through the complications if somehow Win7 can't handle uninstalling in case of problems. And may I add that some of the comments I read in other places were from Win7 users.

Welcome to Seven Forums DV1. I did download and install CS2 on my w7 64bit with no issues of any kind. It worked fine and I uninstalled it since I have CS6.
Only thing to do is give it a try on your system. If it doesn't work out, see the Revo link below my sig.

It's interesting that for you it was a breeze since I remember some of the comments being from 64-bit users having the most problems. Maybe in this case it's not the player but the game? Anyway, as you can see I have 32-bit so I will give it a try and hope that no lights go out in the stadium in the middle of the game.

As for the Revo uninstaller I figure the free version will work as good for something like this? Or would CCleaner which I already have do the same re registry clean-up? I'm okay with downloading programs that are a few megabytes but when it's one that comes in at 348mbs then I get a touch cautionary.

Lastly, is your compatibility set for Win7 or XP3? I ask because with many downloads I've seen suggestions to use XP3 compatibility.

Me too. The only issue is that on a 64bit system it complains about installing to C:\Program Files (x86) so you need to install elsewhere. I chose C:\Adobe CS2. I also found that Illustrator has issues with Windows Aero on my system but runs OK once it disables it.

PS My current sig was done with the "free" Photoshop CS2.

PPS I didn't need to use compatibility mode.

Since I'm using 32-bit is it going to prompt for a new folder like yours? Or regardless should I just make a folder for it as you did straightaway?

It tried to to install in the (x86) location and failed the first time I tried. It gives you the opportunity to change but in your case it shouldn't matter as it is the brackets it can't handle.

In that case I guess I may just go ahead and make its own folder just to keep things tidy. Unless for some reason that would upset the cart somehow. In general it seems like the prompt when installing whatever whether you want another folder/area to install in other than the one suggested.

Yes, I use the free Revo. Its advantage is it will search for reg keys specific to the program that is being uninstalled and let you chose whether or not to delete them. CCleaner only starts the program's built-in uninstaller and scans the whole system's registry and would likely not flag the correct unneeded ones.

The PSC2 installation was clean.

Beforehand I also download the REVO just in case; seems like a good all around program to have.

Yesterday a number of tech blogs discovered that it's possible to download fully working Mac and Windows versions of Adobe's Creative Suite (CS2) for free – including Photoshop CS2, Illustrator CS2, InDesign CS2, Premiere Pro 2, Acrobat Pro 7 and even tools that make you feel a bit nostalgic including GoLive CS2 and Acrobat 3D. Now Adobe has responded saying that they're not free and if you don't own CS2, you shouldn't be downloading them.

A good observation on the legal aspect of all of this.

My parting words on this is that it is extremely doubtful that the activations servers will be re-juiced just to make a point about a software version that's years old. The legal department at Adobe has got to be smarter than that. Dollars to doughnuts they just want the thing to go away and will make sure it doesn't happen again.

Then again, I can't shake the suspicion that there is a sly wink and nod to all of this. Perhaps there is a 'promotional' method to the madness? Nah, I can't get myself to accept Adobe is that diabolical.

Well if Adobe didn't want people to download them for free it wouldn't be there. It's their website. Not some cracked shank website. They just might get some people hooked on their products. The newer versions of course that will have a slight cost.
