Windows 7 doesn't really need to be tweaked, as it is already set to be lean and efficient out of the box. The best way to tweak it is to use your system as you normally would, and let it optimize itself accordingly. Disabling services and altering the OS are not needed, and can actually be harmful to the system.

Windows 7 doesn't really need to be tweaked, as it is already set to be lean and efficient out of the box. The only tweaks that won't be counterproductive are updating your hardware - Motherboard and/or CPU or HDD -> SSD

Yeah, microsoft has finally figured out how to run windows lean and mean. With ram so cheap, bump up to 4GB, or even more if you multitask or run vm's. If you have the money, get a SSD.

We aren't discussing customizing...we're discussing performance, which is not subjective to each user. If you also post on [H]ardForum under the same basic name, then surely you know of Joe Average and the final words on Windows 7 tweaking "leave it alone".

Want a nice tweak? Install a ramdisk software and create a virtual disk unit, then, make Firefox or IE store their temporary files there, its the best tweak I've seen and used in years.

Many of us are responding. Our response is that tweaking might not be advantageous. I've tested a straight up out of the box build with a stopwatch. Then I have performed a half dozen performance tweaks from various websites, tested again and my performance has actually gone down.

In the day, with XP, tweaks really boosted performance and you could quantify the change. Windows 7 is newer, more sophisticated and I think handles tweaking itself quite good.

I'd encourage the end user to try some of these tweaks, but continually measure the change on your system. Quantify it, don't just say..it "seems faster". Get a stopwatch and prove it IS faster. I think the results of the tweaking might surprise you.

I'd like a list of what stocks will go up in value the highest over the next year or so, but just because I want it, doesn't mean it exists. People who are expecting to find tweaks to make their OS run faster, haven't done the necessary research into Windows 7 vs Windows XP.

I think that you are the one that needs to do some more research and stop making blind statements like that. We are here to help and guide the OP with what they would like to do. Recommendations are fine, but that kind of statement is just not helpful and ridiculous. :sarc:

There are quite a few very real tweaks that can be made in Windows 7 to help improve it's performance. Some are only minor, but some can improve it nicely. It just depends on the needs of the user on what to tweak to help make those needs easier and sometimes faster to do.

I agree that someone should not just start tweaking for the sake of tweaking. They need to know what they are tweaking and the effects of it before doing so. There are some tweaks that should not even be tried unless you know what you are doing. This is where we come in to help answer questions about them, and make logical recommendations about them.

As always, it would be a good idea to create a restore point before making any tweaks incase a mistake is made, or it causes a negative outcome. This way a system restore could be done using the restore point to easily undo the tweak.

In addition to the good advice above it is a good idea to apply any potential tweak in isolation.

Set a restore point and apply a single tweak, test this over a period of time and if there is an improvement retain the change, if no improvement, restore the system to it's previous state and only then move onto the next.

Most of those links are for customizations, which is an entirely different topic than tweaks. There aren't tweaks to make Windows 7 run faster, as there were with XP, and that's what the OP was looking for. However, if we switch gears and talk about customization, Windows 7 offers quite a bit, more so than any previous OS we've had. The two concepts should be separated and treated as such.

Like what has been said over and over, Windows 7 doesn't need tweaks. You can tweak you computer right into a Windows 7 repair and install.
