Hi there!
I have recently updated my OS from Vista to Windows Professional RTM x64. I have very annoying problem with Aero on my system. Aero interface in Seven is really laggy - this includes showing/hiding taskbar, menus fading , even moving windows around and sometimes using scrollbars. It looks like a FPS drops in animation. On Vista everything was OK, same as when disabling Aero theme.
I googled a lot for this problem, and i am not alone with it, but nobody can solve this issue. My graphics is RADEON 4870 i am using latest Catalyst 9.8 drivers. I have tried to revert to default windows drivers, but problem still occures.
Please help!

There is several ways to change the way aero re-acts. We need to know abt your sys specs, Os clean or upgrade

Normally when this happens to me, a restart is all that is needed and it fixes itself

Looked at your specs, and it would seem that your problem just might be, you do not have enough ram. You are running a x64 OS, and yes I realize there are some that will say 2 gigs of ram is enough, however, I learned the hard way, and that was I had the same problems you are having. Not saying it is going to help you, albeit it was just the medicine for my system. :)

Oh, Welcome To The Forums.

Sorry but i think it is impossible that it can help. How amount of RAM can speed up rendering process done by GPU? System has a lot of free RAM after boot. So even if i have 4 gigs od RAM, problem would still occure when i load more programs into memory. That is impossible i think:) But than You for answer.

Something worth checking is disk access and CPU load while you're experiencing the slow GUI performance (open the task manager performance tab). If there is a lot of disk accessing and high CPU load it could cause the poor performance in spite of the strong GPU. That's why adding ram could help. 2 gb is on the low side, especially for x64 IMHO.

I have done some tests and this lag is not connected with CPU load or disk usage. I've noticed another thing when moving windows. First, when i move window for short amount of time, everything is OK (no lag). But after few seconds (1-3) , while still dragging window, i can see a great FPS loss and choppy animation. When i release window, everything starts again (eg. firstly OK ,then lag) The same effect exists when resizing a window.

Thanks for the specs. I notice your running 64bit with 2 gigs of ram. the lag may be just retrieving from page file. How bid is your page file set to?

i was using 64bit vista and 64bit7 with 2gbs ram and had no problems

id say it something related to ure video card drivers

if thats the only problem ure having is just aero effect

have you tried uninstalling all ati items

I have a clean installation of Windows, so i dont think unistalling drivers can help -current drivers are first I installed, so everything should be fine.
Thank U all for replays, and I am wating for further suggestions.

Wow a clean build with what really acts like memory problems. If this was NOT a clean install, I'd wonder what other applications or processes are in use. Still, I'd take a look and see through the task manager if there is anything tapping the system out. I ran with an ATI card for a long time and quit the cards after seeing the driver/memory footprints - and I was running with 4MB on a 32-bit version of XP at the time.
Is there anybody you could borrow some RAM from? I'm all for trying the fast and easy physical stuff before diving into the software. Otherwise.. what are the programs being loaded into memory?

I have this same problem. Clean install of Win7 64 running forceware 190.62. The problem also occurs when I drag a window between monitors. Switching from Aero to basic did fix it. Never had this problem in Vista64 though. I hope this gets fixed for real.

For some of you who are upgrading your OS from Vista to Win 7 you have to remember that your system/computer was optimized by the manufacture to run smoothly with Vista, or XP. MY Gateway FX-7026 runs Vista just a little faster, and smoother than Win 7. Now if you feel that more ram is not the answer, then it can be only one thing, and that is Video Card or it's drivers.

Using two monitors (28" and 22") along with a Nvidia Gforce 8800 GT OC (512 mg) with 8 gigs of ram I have attempted to create the same programs you are talking about, and as of yet haven't been able. It has me stumped. Back to the drawing board. :)
