I have used Netfix to view streaming movies for years without any issues. After the automatic update the other night, the silverlight plugin crashes every time.

OK, some background. I HATE WINDOWS 7 AUTOMATIC UPDATING!!! I have had to re install Windows 7 several times after having problems following an update. I usually have it deactivated. However, the other day I downloaded the Windows Essentials package and unknown to me that turned the automatic update back on

Other than re installing Windows 7, anyone have any idea about how to make silverlight work now? Thanks.

System Info:
OS - Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
Processor - Intel i5-2500k CPU @3.30Ghz 3.30 Ghz
Ram - 8.00 GB

I should have also said this happens regardless of browser (Firefox, Chrome, IE) and only on the my desktop computer. The "not updated" laptop still works so I highly suspect it does have something to do with an updated file.

Hello Jim. I am Dusty and hopefully I can manage to help you out with this problem.

Windows update is actually very helpful, and if it breaks something in your computer, chances are there is something wrong on your computer's end. Windows update provides a range of good thigns, from security updates to compatibility updates, and even updates MSE. In order to have a more secure computer, it is best to regularly check for updates or leave that feature on. However, please don't think I am trying to pressure you, the choice it yours to make.

Did you try reinstalling silverlight? (Uninstall it first). After that, does Silverlight work differently in IE vs IEx64? Silverlight does not support x64 browsers, but the regular IE should be fine.

You might also try a system restore

Hi Dusty. Following your suggestion, I did uninstall silverlight and then reinstalled it. That did fix the problem. Thank you very much.

I still do not understand why the problem only started AFTER the system update. This is not my first computer and it is not the first time I have had some kind of an issue following an update. One time, I had to replace several drivers. One time, no sound would come out of the speakers.

I do not use either version of IE on a regular basis. As I stated, I did check to see if the problem occurred with all the browsers. I was using IE 32bit.

Any way, thank you very much for the help.

Jim, I apologize for the redundancy in my previous post. Glad you got it sorted though!

I suppose with every change in the system there is the potential to mess up something that has already been installed. The chances are usually pretty slim, if slim to none. It is a good idea to use windows update right when you get a new computer, and constantly allow it to update. "Important updates" are labeled that way because they greatly help you and your computer. Optional are more up to you, but there are optional updates that can also greatly benefit you. You can also have drivers automatically installed through windows update, which is awesome if you don't want to look for them or you ever install something new, it will do everything for you.

There are greater problems when you update later on down the road, and fewer problems if you've done all your updating to begin with. As computer hardware, software, security, and functionality changes, your computer needs to keep up. That is why you get updates to begin with. Hope that explains it a bit. If not, Microsoft has some more explaination:

What is Windows Update?

There's an easy, free way to help keep your PC safer and running smoothly. It's called Windows Update. All you have to do is turn it on, and you'll get the latest security and other important updates from Microsoft automatically.

Windows Update - Windows 7 features - Microsoft Windows

And the grande Finale (Lists a bunch of questions and answers): Understanding Windows automatic updating

If ever you need drivers (aside from windows auto update, if you opt out), other Sevenforum members and I would be more than happy to find each and every one you ever needed, if the need does arise. Any future problems, be sure to post here on these forums and someone will find a solution for ya. Take care
