A reinstall isn't a problem, the backup process is. I want to backup all my programs+their data (not just to copy the folders in C:\program files to a portable hdd, because then they won't be in the registry, right?)
Saving programs isn't worth the effort at all, trying to get the registry correct would be a nightmare. You will need to reinstall the programs.
If I had any idea there was malware or a virus or key logger involved here then reinstalling the Op system would have been my first choice but you sounded like you were having a browser problem which related to networking.
Once you see the browser going places you haven't directed it too then you are fighting a losing battle.
A system image comes in really handy for times like this. I highly suggest you set up Windows file recovery next time. It allows you to create a new image on a schedule automatically which you can save to a separate hard drive .
