i dont know where exactly to put this since it spans such a massive amount of software and hardware anyways:

I have a Dell Inspiron M1050 with an AMD Triple Core (2.3 Ghz) and an ATI Radeon 4250 HD Integrated.
4 Gb RAM
500Gb HDD
Windows 7 Home Premium x64 (obviously)

so, ive had this laptop for over 3 years, i know its past the expiration date. anyways about 3 months ago it started getting the .wav explorer hang issue, where windows 7 tries to read .wav data and cannot support it therefor causing explorer to freeze. this was annoying but i fixed it by editing the Registry so it no longer is allowed to read .wav information.

After doing above however i realized that it was time for my annual Format and Reinstall. i completed that, updated everything, i have my 6 programs i actually keep on the computer and for some reason its incredibly slow. when i go to My Computer it will hang for a sec before loading drive info, and when i click to enter the drive it will freeze every other time. other weird symptoms were the drive pictures, in the left hand side (images for my pictures, music, etc) did not load. programs are taking forever to run, they run poorly randomly. and the worst is that webpages, completely randomly, wont load. itll be stuck in a loading loop. i run google chrome, but it doesnt seem to be software related. i have 15ms ping, 15mb down, 2mb up. so not internet.

the computer says it still has 4gb of RAM. and my cores (according to my CPU Usage monitor) arent being overloaded except when im transferring files.

other weird issue: when going fullscreen in youtube videos the UI wont load. but they video will, so whatever is running the overlay for the video on my side is obvioulsy broken, could be why sites like facebook wont load.

this laptop used to be super fast when it came to opening system menus, drives, etc. and would transfer quickly, but now its all gone to **** and i have no clue why :(

TL;DR: Computer is running slow, not loading drives, transferring slowly, explorer is running at high resources, webpages will get stuck in a loading loop. but still has RAM and fresh OS install.

How close did you come to the perfect install in Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7?

If there is much variance I'd do it over, wiping the HD first with Diskpart Clean Command.

Pay particular attention to how drivers are handled in Win7 as it's not at all like XP.

Once you get a perfect install you can save a Win7 backup image as described in tutorial so you never have to reinstall again.

If problems persist here are Troubleshooting Steps for Windows 7
to go over your install. You can trace resource hogs with Troubleshooting with Process Monitor - TechNet Blogs

the new install is clean and all drivers are installed with no issues. could be the hard drive going out?

Perhaps your HDD is dying.

Have you tried running "Check Disk" and the manufacturer's HDD utility.

Drive access slow, long loading times in My Computer and high CPU usage when transferring files make me think of bad or absent storage or chipset drivers.

I cannot find your model on Dell website. Where you got your drivers from after the reinstall? This page of dell website helps you identify the product and get to the support page where dell-approved drivers are.

its totally Dell M5010 i just apparently have dyslexia.

i got my drivers form the dell website, but alot of the wouldnt install because they couldnt find any hardware associated with the driver. but that was for the various bluetooth (which i dont have) and an ethernet controller.

This is the not the correct way to handle drivers in Win7. You must have thought you were installing XP.

Drivers in Win7 are provided by the installer, and then quickly updated when you run all rounds of Important and Optional Windows Updates after enabling Automatically deliver drivers via Windows Update (Step 3).

Only after all Updates are installed with no more when you Check for Updates should one import any drivers still missing in Device Manager from the Dell Support Downloads webpage for you tag number.

Other tips here to get a perfect Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7 based on what's worked best helping with tens of thousands of them since before Win7 was even released.

no, i knew i was installing windows 7. installing drivers manually isnt any worse than windows doing its own process, and i would rather install the WLAN manually so i dont have to run a cable from the router to my laptop. regardless, its set to replace drivers on my pc with better ones through windows update and there are no new updates for me so according to windows my drivers are fine.

Not if you installed drivers from the OEM Support Downloads webpage that don't work as well as the drivers Win7 wants. You might be getting even better performance if you'd done it correctly.

And it says in the tutorial to put your wireless driver in the backup so you can get online quickly to do all rounds of Updates. But I can see you didn't read the tutorial anyway.

Just go ahead and do it the way you want. That's why you ask for help at the top tech forums on the web, right?

i already had my WLAN driver as a back up, hence why i could get online quicker. and if im getting my drivers from the support page, why would windows update come up with anything different? i have all my drivers on a flash drive, the same ones ive used for this procedure time and time again, theyve worked each time with no issues. and this time there is suddenly an issue.

i didnt know windows update would install drivers on 7 for me, im used to manual installation because i worked on XP systems for a while. regardless, no need for your quips. im here asking for help, not flak. and none of your options seem to have a chance at fixing these issues. now if you can explain how windows update will be getting different drivers than what the support page supplies ill give it a shot but id like to avoid doing an entire install again just to have the same issues.

and yes i recheck for updated drivers on the page.

Perhaps your HDD is dying.

Have you tried running "Check Disk" and the manufacturer's HDD utility.

ive ran the check disk with no errors happening, i have yet to run the manufacturers HDD utility though i dont see how that will come up with anything different

Again you challenge the advice we're giving which will often cause some of our best helpers here to just move on.

The HD maker's HD diagnostics checks the surface condition of the HD to determine with certainty if it's good. Disk Check only checks the file system which resides on the HD. You need both to get the full picture of your HD.

You can also install CrystalDiskInfo - Software - Crystal Dew World to read the SMART status off the HD chip.

Then I'd work through the other http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/220165-troubleshooting-steps-windows-7-a.html or argue with them.

its not "challenging" im just wanting a reason why it would give me a different result. and you gave me one so ill run it.

Crystal says its in good health and temp at 51c

also step 20 of this tutorial says to install drivers and then windows updates. so explain how i did something wrong by installing them manually? http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/1649-clean-install-windows-7-a.html

Next test the http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/105647-ram-test-memtest86.html for 5-6 passes or overnight to stress it.

Try IE10 or Firefox to see if problem persists.

Please post back screenshot of http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/274797-disk-management-post-screen-capture-image.html

I'd next do a diagnostics install:

Wipe the HD with of all code http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/52129-disk-clean-clean-all-diskpart-command.html which itself can interfere. Access http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/119713-diskpart-pc-startup.html?ltr=D

Follow closely the steps for a http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/219487-clean-reinstall-factory-oem-windows-7-a.html#post1839164. Run for awhile with only the wireless or ethernet driver to see if problem exists. Then run all rounds of Updates in small groups, checking performance long enough between each group to see if one might contain the problem.

Once all Updates are installed start installing your programs like Chrome, one at a time in order of which you use the most. Work with each program long enough to know whether its addition has brought on the problem.

If you can't isolate the problem then finish up the http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/220165-troubleshooting-steps-windows-7-a.html to go over the install closely.

will do, thank you!
