Am I stuck with the printer default?

Hi all, I have a Brother DCP 1610W B/W Laser printer which seems to save text in pdf as default, the text is saved to a dedicated folder as a pdf file, and when clicked on it is opened with Foxit pdf reader, If possible I would like the printer to save text letters as a .odt file and then it could be opened with Libre writer which I am more conversant with for editing text, but in the printers device settings on the File Tab I cannot find an option in the menu to save scanned letters as text or .odt files which I would prefer. the only options are pdf, bmp, png, tif and .jpg
Can anybody advise of a way round this problem?

Hello,

Does your printer/scanner software support Optical Character Recognition (OCR)? If it does, then there should be some menu option in the software to scan to .rtf .odt or .doc format. Otherwise, I think the answer to your question is limited by the hardware that you are using. In which case, you will need a new scanner/printer or a new dedicated scanner that supports OCR. Once you have established that your scanner supports OCR, then you can begin to explore the features you desire in the software side of things.

A temp work around is to find a free utility that will on-demand convert pdf to either odt or doc.

Corrupt .jpg's

Hi Roland, sorry I have been a bit hasty, I thought I had cracked it but I've cocked up!! I used ZAMZAR an advertised free online converter but it only worked for free once, it converted easily and quick and saved converted txt to the same folder, but when I opened the converted txt with my Libre writer blue squares came round the edges of the letter and my cursor would not work and I could not edit the text, so now its back to the drawing board, regards Robert
