Yeah I got lucky there. The interesting thing today, the 7970 and the R9-280X are the same price right now brand new. I think they need to drop the prices of the 7970 a bit more if they want to clear the stock.

Roll on the 15th for me, lets hope the 290X turns out to be a goodun, and lets hope I manage to order one ok lol.

Yeah i think the pricing is a bit odd as it's essentially the same card isn't it Maybe they're planning some mad price drop to clear out the old stock in th comming wk's.

Yeah, all the other models are available now in the UK Stormy, AMD are being very tight lipped about the 290/290X, it's very annoying but it's less than a week until release now so not long to wait until we see what all the hype was about. All I can say is it better be good!

I've heard you are able to crossfire a HD 7970 and an R9 280X, and also without a crossfire bridge. Nice to see a company is finally making use of PCI 3.0 instead of using an external link.

That's good Paul you got some good money for it I on the other hand undecided and I am not sure it would be worth it since I will pull the same amount of frames as a single 290x

@ Steve and Paul Ganjiry ADDRAM I do believe the 290 will be priced about a $100 more I doubt it will be 599.00 or 699.00 I truly believe AMD is playing with people here 280 =350.00 the 290 most likely will be 499.00 like the 7970 when it was Ghz Ed

If all the cards released today are rebranded 7000 serise cards and the 280X is a rebranded 7970 GHz edition, where is AMD going to go with the 290X? What is it going to be a rebrand of? Maybe a double 280X? Also, only the high end 280X is $350, many of the others are $300. The one I've read reviewed most is the Asus DC2T which is $310. And it is a tripple slot card which will make CFX a lot more difficult. It just seems to me that the reviews I've read raise more questions than answers.

Well I assume the 290 is a 7990 but a single GPU

You can find plenty double slot 7970 ghz ed that Asus one is just a Tank

you can also get 7990 in double slot form as well thinner and dual fans

Here's a bit more info for ya folks

In the run up to the launch of AMD’s R9 290X, which is happening “soon” – that’s all we can say, AMD have given us the go ahead to release a little snippet of our data. AMD have stated we can reveal the performance of the R9 290X GPU in BioShock Infinite at 4K against Nvidia’s GTX 780. Thanks to AMD’s generosity we were able to do our own 4K testing on the Sharp PN-K321 32 inch 3840 x 2160 display. Below you can see our results of the benchmark AMD is allowing media publications to release. Interestingly our results show the AMD R9 290X is 19.98% faster than Nvidia’s GTX 780 on Bioshock Infinite at 4K with very high detail settings.

AMD also provided us with their own results where they achieved an average of 44.25 FPS with the R9 290X and 37.67 with the GTX 780. Those results suggest the R9 290X is 17.5% faster than the GTX 780. Of course AMD’s test was run at Ultra with Ultra Depth of Field whereas our 4K tests were more sensible aiming to give the smoothest playable 4K framerates so we opted for “only” very high.

We will have plenty more to come for you in terms of the AMD R9 290X – we will have a full review and we will also have a 4K “gaming showdown” – both of these will go live on launch day (whenever that is!) . That showdown will include appearances from the mighty fine AMD R9 290X pictured above, the Sapphire R9 280X Vapor-X which we reviewed when the R9 280X launched a while back, Nvidia’s flagship GTX Titan and Nvidia’s GTX 780. We will test all four GPUs across a range of graphically intense titles to help show you what current high end GPUs can really do at 4K.

Some more teasing for ya

Yesterday AMD allowed reviewers to share benchmark results in two games: BioShock Infinite and Tomb Raider. Today guys from PCTuning shared some results from other titles, only this time it is not exactly with AMD approval

Data is taken from Radeon R9 290X reviewers guide, these numbers are for reference only. You should probably take them with a grain of salt, but it won’t get anymore official than this.

So to make it short, the average R9 290X performance advantage over GeForce GTX 780 is 23,8%, and this is just 2160p resolution. Some games, like Sleeping Dogs, show 152% better performance than with NVIDIA’s card! Apparently there is no title on the list that would offer better experience with GeForce GTX 780, only Splinter Cell Blacklist is somehow limiting the performance of R9 290X and making it just 4% faster, well it’s NVIDIA’s game for a reason.

By the way, these benchmarks were performed in performance mode (it’s actually called UBER-mode), not in Quiet-mode you have seen yesterday with Bioshock and Tomb Raider benchmarks. In this mode graphics card’s clocks go slightly higher regardless of the noise generated by the fan.

I will watch it in full in a bit mate, but the price is lower than that, the cheapest I have found so far is £439.99, and I read a review here which gives it 90% overall.

Dam mate, that doesn't look too good does it, how the hell it can take 11mins to drop in temp I have no idea! I dunno what to say really. I was happy about the price, and all the other reviews I looked at so far seemed to think it was fantastic, but that guy knows his stuff, and it don't look good.

I guess I better carry on waiting and see what the GTX 780ti is like, if nothing more they are going to drop the regular 780 prices when that is released next month.

Yeah he was wrong on the pricing but i think he changed it later on in the vid to £450 i think. He basically said that the card keeps up with a 780 but the temps are stupid high(95c) and even when back on desktop after running a bench it took over 10 min for it to drop down from 70c+ to 46c. Apparently no 3rd party vendors will be releasing cards for a while but i think Nvidia said the same with the Titan didn't they?
If that vid is anything to go by then AMD have made a huge balls up but hopefully that's not the case as we really needed them to bring something good out of the bag to get Nvidia pricing down. Luckilly i won't be upgrading for a good while so won't be effected by it for now..

I'm with you Ryan. I really am not very concerned with what it looks like, as much as I care about the performance. Why he goes on and on about looks is beyond me. And, the temps, he obviously does not know how to set a custom fan profile. I'm willing to bet you did that for your cards. I know I did it for mine. The afterburner he was using is quite capable of doing just that.
