Haha. With that as your 1 post you'll probably never see this but you're missing out on so much!
When i first got 7, did the usual programs, drivers, blah blah, sorted out virus protection, then went looking for a solution to the gif issue. I found corgano's reply in this thread with his fantastic tool. Never had any problems, virus or otherwise, simple to set-up & problem solved!
5 months later & im still here! So in fact, i owe corgano more thanks than i realized. My 7 is awesome & part of that is because of sevenforums.

Yes, I was pretty sure of the reason why the anti-malware engines were throwing a false positive.

However, VT results count for a lot, and it is always a good idea to get something down in writing (preferably from the author) as to why the program is flagged, so that random searchers who find your program through google (or perhaps are searching as to why your program caused a malware alert on their computer) find that they don't have to worry about it.

Also, advanced malware will often only trigger a handful of scanners on VT. That's why they use so many. Its use as a FP-detection machine, while handy if you know what you're doing, is much less relevant than its use as a really-new-and/or-crafty-malware-detection machine.

But all this is a lot of words over a minor thing.

Thanks very much for the utility, Corgano! Now I can watch "stick vs. wall" quickly and conveniently whenever I feel the itch for some awesome in my day.

ok, so i decided to try scanning a blank / much simpler autoit .exe
the whole program consists of: beep(1000,1000)
here are results
It was odd, considering that the exe had practically nothing in it, but beep() uses winapi calls. lets trying with NOTHING AT ALL in it. results

Try putting out the idea to make a codec for WIC to support animated gifs

I also made this because IE took to long to start up.

Many, many thanks, corgano. This is exactly what I needed. I made a folder for apps that require no installation. I simply put gifview.exe there, associated it with that extension, and am all set. One of the first things I do when I get a computer is delete IE icons. I've been using Firefox for as long as it's been out. Why they made IE the default GIF animation viewer is, frankly, puzzling.

It is made in AutoIt, but I have since reinstalled my computer (3 times since I posted this, actually) and source has been lost. I might check if I have an online backup somewhere.

PowerPoint 2010 animated gifs on Windows 7

Microsoft may be coming out with a patch to make animated gifs work with 7.

I just installed PPT 2010 on three different systems, XP, Vista, and 7 and it mishandles the gifs only on 7.

I contacted MS. The rep acknowledged, after a lot of diagnostic work, after using the same gif that I was using on every Windows 7 machine available to him, and after taking a day to contact others, that it was the Windows 7 glitch that was responsible.

So maybe since their newest PPT will not run on their newest OS, they will finally do something about this problem.

Windows 7 uses the windows imaging object to display images, and they have made it clear that they never intend on supporting animated gifs in it. They may fix PowerPoint in the new version though.

This is an important enough issue for us that either we'll be reverting or using other presentation software with proper animation handling built in.

One other observation. MS may in fact fix PPT, though not Windows 7, since PPT under 7 already partially animates gifs.

Under certain conditions (the gif being stationary, not in motion--fly in, etc.) PPT 2010 under 7 will animate the first loop, though not subsequent ones.

The only problem that I can see with this nice compact program is an issue with moving to another animation while one is loading. Switching immediately among 3 gifs will cause the second gif to show some frames over whatever current file you have open until you close the viewer. Maybe this is an issue with my computer, though.

Hey is there any chance you could add the ability to see the file name of the gif that's playing. IMO, that's all this need and it would be perfect. I have folders with 1000 animated gifs and it can become difficult to differentiate which file is which. If I could see the file name under or above the file that's playing it would make my life much easier. But to be honest, the program is a life save like it is. Thank you so much!

It's not very well written, i'll admit. I am looking into making / replacing the codec for the windows image viewer to make gifs work in the default image viewer. I have an example from MSDN (google "WIC gif animation", one fo the first couple results) and it works fine, but i do not know enough C or enough about the structure about the codecs to make one. If anyone knows C and is willing to give this a try, please speak up.

thank you corgano for putting that up, it works to play the gif's. however, i hate how in windows 7 they don't actually work by themselves cause with my old computer i used to set them as my background but i can't do that on my new compter..

It's better then useing a GIF. You should be able to get it to work pretty easily

Well I just discovered that Windows 7 doesn't play gifs like XP. There appears to many things that Windows 7 doesn't do any more!

Thank you so very much, Corgano. Like Elvira posted, I too registered here just to give thanks for your coding. It was a gift from above that you created that. So I wouldn't actually lose the program, I copied and pasted it in my computer>program files>windows photo viewer folder. I just set it as the default like the others have done and voila! Kudos, Corgano.

Thank you so very much, Corgano!!! You've solved a very frustrating and irritating problem for me :banghead: (and I'm sure many others!).

Your viewer is simple, as fast as Microsoft Photo Viewer to load, and enables scrolling through other animated .gif images in the same folder. Perfect. Another BIG THANK-YOU!!!!!

In regards to your gifviewer, does it play gifs at a faster rate, several gifs seem to be moving much faster than when IE plays them. Or is that just IE being slow?

I know its not my computer which is running specs that are pretty over kill for such a small task (ani. gif viewing)

Also I noticed when I had the exe on my desktop to test, then I moved it, and re-browsed for it, that it no longer would work and even though I found the file(gifviewer) and click it, the image will open in IE, but if I move it back to my desktop, it will work again. I couldn't find any way to fix this, though this probably has more to do with Win7 than your exe.

So until I can find a fix for that I won't be using your nifty tool.

Edit 2:

Looks like I found the issue in the registry using CCleaner deleted that specific entry, moved it to where I wanted it and re browsed for it.
