I've read several threads here and elsewhere, but they have either stopped without any resolution or the fix was something quite simple.
I stupidly offered to set up a friend's new home network. I've set up plenty of small windows networks in the past (since Win3.11) and have always been able to resolve any problems, either myself or by searching, but this one has me stumped.
All the equipment is brand new except the printer:
2 x Asus R700V notebook computers (Win7 Home Premium 64 bit)
(Wireless chip: Atheros AR9485)
1 x D-Link DNS-320 Share Center NAS
1 x Billion BiPAC7700N R2 wireless router/DSL modem
1 x Brother 2142 USB laser printer
The start of the problem:
In Explorer I can see each computer from the other, but when I click on it I get an error something like "Can't connect. You must have typed the name wrong".
The first day I set this up, everything worked. The printer is connected directly to one of the computers and shared. The other computer could print to it. However, after the computers were shut down, the next day the second computer would not print. No error messages. Simply nothing came out of the printer.
I did some basic checks and couldn't see anything wrong so I left the Homegroup on both computers and tried to set them up again.
Now, this is what happens when I try to set up a Homegroup:
On the first computer (I've tried both) I create a Homegroup and note down the generated password.
On the second machine I select "Join Homegroup". The dialog asks for the password and then thinks for a couple of minutes. It then states that it could not connect. No specific error message or code is given. Nor is any remedy suggested.
I run the network troubleshooter and about half the time (I've done this about 20 times so far) it will say it's fixed a problem (never the same problem twice) but still does not connect. From this point on it will not even see the other computer's Homegroup until I disable Homegroups on both machines, reboot and start again.
Some pertinent points:
-The The NAS is connected to the router via a cable, but the computers connect wirelessly.
-I can't ping either computer from the other by IP address (or name).
-I have now set DHCP on the router to assign fixed IP addresses to each computer, but that made no difference.
-Both computers can connect to the Internet fine.
-Both computers can read and write to the NAS.
-Neither computer can access shared resources on the other.
-Both computers were running AVG, but I now have Windows Security Essentials on them.I also could not get the computers to communicate with no anti-virus running.
-I have switched everything off and on multiple times.
-Network discovery is switched on. In fact all the settings in advanced networking are at set to the configuration I found in my searches. (They already were, out of the box).
There are a lot of other things I have tried (which I forget at the moment).
Where do I go from here? I need to come up with something to try on my next visit. I can't spend a lot of time during each visit.
Are there any clues in the wireless adapter properties or ipconfig -all?
