Here's something else to ponder on! Finally someone did a review on sub ohm tanks since there are enough coming out now! VapingCheap just put one out.

With 2015 shaping up to be “the year of the Sub Ohm Tank”, at least in part, I figured that a comparison review of some of the most popular sub ohm clearomizers was warranted. Now, with every manufacturer and their mother vying to get in on the sub ohm tank craze, choosing which sub ohm tank to buy can seem like a daunting task.
Best Sub-Ohm Tank Comparison

That covers several tanks including the Atlantis V2 3ml and Horizon Artic tanks. The Atlantis Mega as I was saying before is a 5ml tank with an AFC on the drip tip being seen for that as well as the V2. Aspire Atlantis Mega

I was really interested in that Artic. Especially since it was made to feel like a Kayfun or with wide open airflow for sub ohm builds.

Then it was mentioned there was no RBA. Thats a deal breaker since thats a must for me. Once you start wrapping your own coils, and making your own wicks, you'll never want to buy another one of those heads again. It's not only much cheaper but they are leaps and bounds better too. At least IMHO.

Real bummer. Like everything about the Arctic until that.

The Artic is a looker! As far as RDAs I still haven't found any with capacity where the Atlantis Mega would be a consideration if I hadn't already invested in the 5ml replacements for the first version.

As for the first RDA here was a Big Dripper clone I spotted at Amazon and decided to give a try to a No Go when it simply wouldn't fire either with the two premade 24awg coils it came or a fresh one made up. As of this time since late October early Nov. when the Atlantis was first seen I have only replaced about 3 or 4 stock coils to this day which seems to confirm the early bird on the coils lasting months without fuss. I still haven't given up entirely on the RDAs but will be seen to later.

The older SMOK Tumbler tanks with the Smoktech coils were rebuilt a few times to see if the life on those could be extended but not worth the bother while for the smaller eGo style tanks for those who run at the low volts, watts not wanting sub ohm or more they can become a nuisance changing the coils every second week at the longest for steady use. I keep a few of those going however for a certain selection of flavors best run at the lower temps since they don't do well even in the sub ohm at the higher watts.

With the VW stuff of course you get to adjust the watts to find the best vape for each at 0.5ohms over ending up with a mismatch of resistance if two rewraps don't come out equal. The Aspire silica coils have been economical considering the ready to go convenience compared to the older stuff I had been using. What sees those last even longer of course is having several mods rather then using just one or two constantly I go back and forth from depending on where I am or doing.

I think one of the main reasons the RDAs grew so big so fast is that despite the rapid influx of higher wattages no one had the tanks to run on anything! First it took years for the Much Needed Bottom Coil BCC, BDC, and now BVC tanks to arrive finally to see you get something sadly needed in the premade coils and just lately some of the latest sub ohm tanks are now able to handle the higher wattages upto 100w. The temp sensors now being seen as well as the VW mods automatically adjusting the voltage according to the resistance are making the head way that had been lacking.

See thats another reason I like building my own.

I will build a new coil once a week. But I do a Dryburn, and rewick Daily. Even if Im vaping the same flavor.
I do this because some flavors may gunk up the coil (Especially super sweet juices) , so you can keep it clean and prevent that nasty taste.

And another is I just like a fresh wick and dont like to use them more than a day or 2. Some will go a week or so, but everyones different.

That gets expensive fast buying them premade.

When Im making batches of Ejuice, and testing different flavor combinations, I could easily go through 10-15 wick changes in one evening. Depending how many experimental mixes I am doing.

That's because you are rewrapping with cotton. Granted if you are using Japanese cotton you will see better results. But cotton like any other type of fabric type material absorbs and gums up fast as a rule. With the silica coils seen with the Atlantis I can swap out flavors with each tank fill and only wait for the little of the previous to dissipate before getting the full flavor of the next.

For cleaning with the eventual tendency to gum up I simply drop the small gathering of used coils into something like a travel mug with cover and soak the coils overnight in warm water with a denture cleaner. Some will use rubbing alcohol which I would veer away from since Efferdent will do the job and rinse much easier.

Since the first vape back in Sept. 2012 with the disposables first tried moving on fast to the Bloog cig alikes and finding blank refillable cartridges and later 1.6ml top coiled by them as well as for the Vamo and first eGo batteries the need to swap anything daily would be either one blank worn out fast as expected or the need to soak the long wicked top coiled crap to avoid the burn spots from dry wicking issues commonly seen! The first larger tanks bought for the Vamo V2 were leaky as all H DCT type DCT being the old 510 type of insert or threaded cartimizer you dropped into a tank. The second of those had a locking seal washer type ring on the bottom and still leaked like a sive!

With the mech you end up having the need for high amperage batteries and keeping the resistance consistent while the premade do offer the consistency out of the box. The problem typically seen with the older pre-sub ohm type tanks were obvious as far as lack of vapor production which can also very much damper flavor production forcing people to look at other options and why RDAs took right off! The market being flooded with cheap tanks certainly didn't help any either.

With Smoktech they do have some great stuff at times while you still need to watch for the not so good as well. With Vision the outcome going from the top coiled 1.6ml to the Victory BCC type was no joy as well as other tanks like the SMOK Trophy and Eleaf by iSmoka IClear series that failed on vapor big time whlle the SMOK Tumblers work out well except for the short lived coils. And this was the main problem seen too often.

While many rave about Kanger in contrast Aspire set the pace last year between stepping up with the Nautilus and later Atlantis with the much better coils with the later setting the current trend being seen with all types of imitation and all styles of sub ohms arriving. Some of those however not too good! And that simply brings many back to rebuilds and rewraps. Have been seeing some interesting rebuilding stations that are sure to noticed lately. :D

Yep, been using cotton. In fact, Ko-Gen DO Japenese cotton.

I find it gives slightly better flavor over other cottons, but not by much.
But most importantly it wicks the best of any type Ive tried. For the most part its wicking ability could easily go un noticed, until you start messing with high VG juices and/or High wattage Sub-Ohm vaping. Then that little extra absorbency really makes a lot of difference.

I am going to try Silica again though. Ive only tried it once and that was back when I was first starting building my own.

Hemp wicks work well too. The only issue I have with them is they give everything a earthy note to the flavor. For tobaccos and such this can be a very good thing. But it doesnt work so well, IMHO, for things like fruity vapes.

When building you have to decide which will work best for the most commonly vaped flavors. How things wick as far as individual flavors and who makes can be the deal maker or breaker at times regardless of which cotton.

Haven't been hearing from anyone else using hemp wicks however. What helps even more for cotton is how well each flavor wicks up in order to prevent the dry burn problems too often seen with the typical long wicked CE2-CE4 clearomizers and tanks. The Bottom fed coils was definitely the maker for seeing progress made! Initially you would hear someone mention a 15drop dripper to sample before the RBAs and RDAs came into focus. Those are good for people who write reviews but not for the typical primary tanks.

Now for the Silica the fear factor was the first in the discussions when the Atlantis and Kanger sub ohm tanks were first announced as many were skeptics about anything ceramic. Yet if you burn cotton that's a plant there to consider while nowhere near the tar ever being seen not even being present as well as any burn spots giving off much of anything but a bad taste left behind.

Silica on the other hand will handle the watts much easier especially considering all the new mods people are looking at. With a half dozen Atlantis tanks in use and only replacing 3 coils in the last few months having bought the first in Oct-Nov and the last two by mid March punching them at 50w at times depending on certain flavors the vape I will report has been tested as smooth. With some favors having menthol present or mixed in afterwards the watts did have to be trimmed down to 15w barely firing to 20w at times with one occasion simply being the need to replace one of the coils. The berry blends and a few others on the other hand saw no problems at 40w-50w. They wicked up real easy to be seeing that regardless of tanks, coils, or watts. What wicks well vapes well! :D

Never heard of them. But at this time so many new places are popping up it's Mission Impossible to keep track! And a real problem is who is actually making the ejuice! In NY one place got busted for not seeing child proof caps put on their brand of ejuice lately showing some are rushing to jump on the band wagon just to grab the $$$!

Meanwhile picked up a few more tanks including the Herakles by Sense that is much better then the Melo by a long shot plus one even better being the FreeMax by Starre which can handle 20-100w but gets hot for sure right at 100w! At 70-80w the vape is just the Atlantis at 30w or so! And right when deciding to grab a deal on a third 50w iStick the news about the new 40w with temp control some might interested in as well as the Innoking iTaste MVP 3.0 Pro 60w ame up.

To compete with iSmoka Innokin matched the iStick 50w 4400mah battery with their own 60w 4500mah battery! The mod stands taller then the MVP 2.0 6-11w, the MVP 20W, and the 3.0 20w model I skipped over. Both iStick 50w and the 3.0 Pro feature temp control as well as the setting lock. When going to recharge either however you first unlock the settings as I find that has to be done with the eGo-V V3, V4 batteries as well. And now waiting for the Aspire Triton with RDA option to be stateside already out at a few Hong Kong vendors but still on pre-order. 3.5ml capacity there.

Nicoticket has been around awhile and are excellent!! I would consider them a high end supplier.

They are also one of the few out there that are transparent when showing customers whats in the juice they are vaping.
He has all his juices sent out and tested for Diketones (or Diacetyl), and post the results good or bad. Most flavors that have some in them, mainly custardy notes, are just barely over detectable levels. Which are good numbers in the E-juice buisiness. Transparency like that is something we simply do not see much of.

I do think the Diacaetyl issue is blown out of proportion a bit,but I certainly don't want to be vaping high concentrations of it.
At least here, you exactly how much, if any, is present in the flavors you choose.
Something most suppliers will shy away from or try and avoid talking about. So, gotta give Nicoticket props fro that right?

The fear promoting opponents to vaping would certainly be the ones to take advantage with the Diacaetyl issue trying to make that just another center piece to work from. The media reported rat poison in one instance as well as antifreeze found in ecigs when the science shows another form of Glycol replaced lead and mercury in antifreeze in the effort to detoxify what we now use! PG itself discovered as an effective air sanitizer durring WW II when found to kill off the Influenza virus and later was found helpful for asthmatics and used in inhalers since. PG is also used to blast out heating/air duct works in hospitals where you can't just spray in any chemical cleaners.

As for that particular I have to wonder if they made the Top Ten US vendors list as I know Crystal Canyon Vapes did and in the Top 5 for 2013. I've worked with the owner of CCV and know well he is quite transparent as we have discussed his intentions from the start never to see additives put in use with his stuff! He wants everything kept as natural as possible and I've had the chance to find that out when comparing to other sources.

(One success compared to complete fail was seen with CCV's Artic Ice Spearmint/Menthol blend put up against Vista Vapors own spearmint menthol where CCV prevails as a smooth vape while the other? Vaped like gasoline! :p )

Having gotten in samples from various vendors however most haven't been found with problems like a few. Perhaps the particular sample? would be not what you want or how it was blended. With most of the oldest vendors you wouldn't expect too many issues while the latest fly by nights may be a concern after hearing about that NY vendor along with a quick increase of brands suddenly seen available.

$$$ is a big motivator that can't be ignored when maintaining a high degree of actual quality is put on the back burner! One thing I could say I wouldn't mind seeing one bit is some type of ingredients on labeling requirement as well as some type of standardization without being too rigid or Cig Alike brand favored only. With all the fly by night both domestic and certainly imports it makes sense to have some type of screening measures inplace as far as public safety is concerned. We pay the taxes for Big Brother to watch out for us! Not to let Corps $$$ rule however!

And speaking of concerns over Diacetyl and flavoring with it I thought you would want to see the Dept. of Labor's own view under the OSHA section! HAZARD COMMUNICATION GUIDANCE FOR DIACETYL AND FOOD FLAVORINGS CONTAINING DIACETYL

Have a half dozen Atlantis tanks already getting the 5ml replacements for each so I wasn't in a rush for the V2 Mega obviously but will be looking at the new Triton with RDA option to consider being a 3.5ml tank. The Herakles by Sense and the better FreeMax by Starre were two looked at and both fare much better then the iSmoka Eleaf Melo tank while Innokin's iSub tank also does quite well. That came with the just release MVP 3.0 Pro 60w.

Now here I will show the collection of mods I use most often while you won't see the other Vamo types or the ZNA 50 50w in the snapshot here. On the left with a belt clip since I put them on a half dozen of them 3 being the 50w iSticks you will note the iTaste VTR as the first besides the new MVP 3.0 Pro right in front. You have to turn the VTR up to the 15w max in order to get any sub ohm tank to even fire while most start easy at 20w. On the far right is the 150w Luxyoun while the 10w iStick is in there too! :D

2jfb1bs.jpg

The attached file is an out of contrast view of three of the four MVPs. I skipped the 30w but wanted to show people the difference in size with the new 60w standing taller and wider then the MVP 2.0 and 20w. You can see how I did some tank matching in the attached pic as far as the iSub with the 3.0 Pro, the 5ml Nautilus on the 20w MVP, and the Mini on the 6-11w max older 2.0 version which had been replaced by the SMOK Groove II 3-15w box mod that didn't fare so well wanting the 15w max which was seen with the older Vamo V2 I ended up giving away to someone who was in a financial pinch at the time.

What all this goes to show for the most part is just how fast a turnover of technology you are seeing with vaping gear in contrast to the pc market which had seen it's own market boom until the recession?! came about and desktop sales went down in favor of hand helds and tablets. Once a few brands like Kanger and Aspire put their own first sub tanks out the copy cats and others blossomed and are still coming. The original Kanger Sub Ohm however was discontinued while the Namo and Mini linger on.

I am actually thinking about selling my Kanger SubTank and Sigelei 100W Plus.

I liked it at first, but have noticed I haven't picked it up in a long time. Its just collecting dust.
I still prefer my Kayfun/Provari combo. I know many think I'm nuts and think the sub ohms are better, but no idea why I end back with this set up. I just like it better and not really sure why.

I do have a couple Kayfuns, so I can easily swap to a different flavor but I can't see how you guys can keep track of sop many mod/tank set ups LOL. I often misplace mine and have to spend a couple minutes looking for it. I think I need one of those key chain locator things on it.

--- My Nicoticket order came in yesterday though and I absolutely love The Virus! Wakonda is really good too.

Well having sampled dozens of flavors from not only one vendor I know the feeling about trying to keep track of which flavor is in what tank! Some are custom mixes I made up for taste testing a menthol with another to see if menthol and the other will work together. In one 120ml bottle I have several "remnants" of samples I would get in one time only when ordering hardwares.

A good number of people seem to like the KayFun tanks while I wasn't in any rush to abandon the Tumblers entirely either while those are run on the eGo-V VW type batteries. But I now only use so many compared to the number of those I collected before the sub ohms were even heard of. I didn't abandon the Nautilius tanks any keeping one on each of the 20w iSticks as well as the Vamos, MVP 2.0, and MVP 20w while the 15w max VTR sees the pair of Eleaf Melo sub ohm tanks put to use with that when I have some new flavor to try out on different set ups.

As for the sub ohm tanks being better that will depend on who makes it as well as what ejuice goes in. You won't always suddenly see a tremendous boost in vapor output or more robust flavor. A lot depends on the particular ejuice and how well that wicks up even with the better coils! Originally when CCV was first starting and I was doing the initial sampling with the old CE2 stuff the first several flavors put very little vapor out at the then best flavor ratio of 70PG/30VG since 50/50 was "wimpy" and 30/70, 20/80 was "what's this stuff?". Then came one flavor that made the old tanks go to work! :D

Now before assuming anything I went back to those same old flavors with each newer type tank and when the sub ohms arrived those early flavors do put out vapor! Maybe not as much cloud making capable but see more potential as the newer tanks have improvements seen in coil design to be more efficient. So it's not only watts and resistance but quality you look for when trying to find the happy place you want to be at regardless of the set up. The Tumblers. Nautilus. Melo while nowhere as good as the other sub ohms including the iSub Innokin's much needed improvement compared to the IClear series, and other older tanks like the Viva Nova still have application.

Before I forget and while we are on the subject about sub ohm tanks I recalled an article that fits this matter quite well as far as Is a Sub-Ohm Tank Right For You?

The first thing I heard out of one person who was a regular Nautilus user as well when first trying out the Atlantis was: "I'm not going back to the Nautlius. The Atlantis... " blah blah blah Atlantis praise! was heard. The findings here having one been a somewhat heavy 3 pack a day person was that the sub ohm tanks with the performances they offer would seem more suitable for the previously medium to heavy smokers as far as getting more satisfaction not only from more vapor output but also seeing a more intense flavor experience in respect to getting more flavor of those ejuices which lack otherwise.

No one can tell you what you will find to be that happy place I was just referring to in both hardwares and ejuice. You have to find out what works for "you"! plain and simple. ;)

#over head!

Hi Wishmaster, good to hear from you. I just have 2 mods right now, the 2 in the picture I posted. I think it's important to have 2 in case 1 dies.
Tank wise it's just a bit of a hobby, usually I don't have any more than 3 or 4 as I sell the old ones to cover part of the cost of the new ones. I certainly only use 2 at a time, one on each mod.

I just got the new Freemax Starre Pro tank today which is top fill (really great feature) and comes with a 0.15 and 0.25ohm Ni200 coil. First impressions are it's an excellent tank, really good flavour and vapor. I have the new Aspire Triton tank being delivered tomorrow I think which is also top fill.

Hope you are well.

Paul.
