This am when I was installing the critical update put on my machine last night, my machine started to hangup after diagnostics and would not go any further. I tried to do a system restore and the machine was unable to restore because of a file "asrefinc11.js"

Windows could not replace it with an exact copy and would not pass the restore.

Any Suggestions. I cannot get into windows vis safe mode or a disaster recovery disc.

Thanks

You could try a USB OS like Slax. Install it onto a USB drive (easy instructions provided by the makers), switch the pc off, switch it on and tell it to boot from USB in the boot menu. Should work. Then you can look for the file and get rid of it. Or replace it. But I think it's a malware related file so getting rid of it is probably better.

What was the exact error message you got btw?

Hi! Hkdubjr, welcome to 7F :)

In doing a search for "asrefinc11.js". It comes up as a trojan downloader.

Please run an anti-malware scan of your choice.

If you have difficulty in starting the program, rename the .exe file of your anti-malware to a name you will remember and try running it again.

Thank you for the answers I will have to try and load the slax system because I cannot get into windows beyond my disaster recovery cd.
The msg I received, referring to the Restore? Was that system restore was not successful because the file "asrefinc11.js" could not be replaced with its exact duplicate. try and run restore from another point.

I'm hoping the USB drive I have on hand will hold the Slax boot.

Thank you for you for your input.

If your usb drive won't hold it (which I doubt, Slax is not that big) you could get a 'bigger' usb stick, they're pretty cheap nowadays and it's always useful to have a bootable usb OS around in case of problems :)
