Solved Are you serious right now?(Windows 10 forced)

I s'pose you don't have to believe it, but the Win10 upgrade ran on my Win7 machine on Friday night. I had a fresh, completely clean install of Win7 Pro SP1, brought up to date with all defaults (including "Automatic Update" turned on). I let the machine sit there overnight, and on Saturday morning discovered that the Win10 upgrade had run - and failed.

I've been using - and writing about - Windows Update since it was first released in the XP days. I've covered it in the "Windows All-In-One For Dummies" books for XP, Vista, 7, 8, and 8.1 (and lamented its absence for Win 10). I know how to use WU settings - both the exposed settings, and the supporting registry and gpedit settings.

And I got bit. On an absolutely clean machine.

Ya but Vista was a flop, although I loved the change, but they didn`t hand out 7, the best OS ever made.

As as far as this campaign you speak of, I think I`ve seen 10 commercials on TV and Windows 10 on a hood of a Nascar.

Windows 7 on the other hand was all over TV, you`d think they would have made the public much more aware of what they were doing and it may have gone over much better.

Just as you say not everyone is a PC wiz, then so not everyone is a windows insider, and they just want to use their PC.

Hell, some people don`t even watch the news or read a newspaper

I'm not surprised. Even though I do not approve of the way they did it.

Yeah "hey let us update your old out of date OS to the latest one for free" is such a shitty thing to do :sarc:
That presumes that "latest" equals "best". Reasonable people might disagree about that.

When did this happen?

They did force it on people, I had my W 8.1 laptop updates set to never and then disabled in Services and I got a note in the message center to turn on my updates because there important updates to be installed. I looked at the updates and the first thing I saw were driver updates at the top of the list. I knew if I updated I would have had W 10 installed.

I read in another forum they admitted their "mistake" and said it was an error. I haven't heard anything else about it being forced since then.

It happened in October. It happened again last weekend.

Not everyone got bit, but many did. Look at Reddit.

Sorry, but the user interacted and downloaded an update, it does not upgrade to Windows 10 all by itself.

It is impossible for it to do that.

If that were the case then explain to me why I still have Windows 7 ????

You`re reading an article from people who don`t have a clue, and got their data from users that don`t have a clue.

Microsoft allowing the free upgrade to windows 10 is the stupidest thing ever done in the history of man kind ( and that includes the Hindenburg incident ) it has caused nothing but problems for every loyal windows 7 user.

Windows 10 is fine, but it should have never been done this way, it should have been sold just like every other Windows OS, period.

Agree with your conclusions wholeheartedly. But it IS possible. It happened to me.

I guess I am the only one didn't have a problem with Vista, but I don't do all the things to my PC some of you do. I had 4 or 5 white outs then that stopped and it was fine. Someone said Vista had problems but it was fixed with an update and was fine.

I loved Vista, it was a great OS then hacks like infoworld's Randal C Kennedy duped the public that is was garbage and like good click bait the misinformation spread.

Eh? I'm telling you that it happened to me, and thousands of other people. You don't have to believe it, but you should go tell these folks on Reddit that they were in error. Also tell Paul Thurrott. Other bloggers will catch on, probably after Microsoft issues some sort of official apology or clarification.

You're sticking to an outmoded view of Microsoft. Things are changing, rapidly, and people are getting caught in the crossfire.

I'm saying I don't believe you that it did it on it's own, and if it upgraded then you instigated it if you realised or not.

Do you want to upgrade "Yes/No" if they can't get that right they shouldn't be near a computer.

Bingo.

The problem is that they do have computers and Microsoft want them as customers.
Just think many of these people drive. I wonder what they do when they see a big sign that states No Left Turn? Scary! They probable get confused.

It happened because you interacted with your PC, once again, IT did not do it on it`s own.

You push the power button, you click the mouse, you use the keyboard, etc, etc, etc :)

I loved Vista, couldn`t wait to install it, it`s just a tad slow and a memory hog.

7 is the best :D

And there you go, you just reiterated what we`ve all been saying, it takes user input to install 10, it WILL NOT do it on it`s own.
