I am having an issue with an older game. It used to work just fine, I would start the game, and it would automatically revert to the old 4x3 ratio, but now, it stretches the game to fit my widescreen monitor. I tried rolling back the driver update, but it still is stretching. Please help!

What game is this?

Can you change the resolution in the game settings?

Can you adjust the game in the graphics card control panel options?

Been awhile since I had an AMD GPU so I don't know if you have per game settings in the GPU settings or not.

Thanks for the reply. NHL09 and FIFA06. You can change the resolution, but not the aspect ratio. I've looked in the AMD control panel, and I don't see any options for that. When I had this issue years ago, I just ran the comparability option, and it chose Windows XP Service Pack 2, which fixed the problem, but now it does not.

Does this help? https://www.amd.com/en/support/kb/faq/gpu-68

You should also use compatibility mode for XP and run the game as Admin. Just so we're clear on how to do that, right click the game's shortcut and chose properties. In there is the compatibility tab.

If all this still fails, try uninstalling the game and install the game to the root of C drive only, outside of the emulated and Windows protected programs folder. This folder is protected by Windows and can be a source of issues. Especially with older games and games that use custom add-ons, etc. Once the game is installed to a path of say C:\NHL09, then run the game in compatibility for XP and Admin as well.

Note that some games allow you to change the screen resolution and maybe even the aspect ratio by entering a certain string after the path directory in the shortcut icon in the target box. But my quick Google search yielded no such option. I know for a fact this option is available for Battlefield 2, and in the Team Speak program a sting is used to use an ini file to change Team Speak's default port. So I'm sure these two old games you have there may have this option. I'd have to do some real digging to see if it exists.

I live in northern Colorado BTW. Loveland to be exact. :D Place has grown by leaps and bounds. Got too big too fast. Takes at least an hour now just to run a few errands.

Nope. None of that worked. Scaling is on in the Catalyst Control panel, running as Admin, compatability in XP. I'll need to back up all my mods before I attempt to uninstall, I just think of that as a last restort.

So it looks like many people are having resolution problems with NHL 08 and NHL 09. Reading a post from tapatalk.com brought me to this video and in the video's description has a dropbox link for modifications. I'm not sure how to use them, but it may be your only way as it seems this game has to be hacked to work. Here's the YouTube link YouTube

Funny that you said it worked before. I don't know why other than your GPU driver settings. I'll look into the other game and see what I can find.

Oh, here's the tapatalk link: Source code for DLLs? NHL09 possible? - NHL04 Rebuilt 2020

well, i tried all of that, and nothing worked. It would be kind of cool to get it to display in widescreen or whatever, but I'd be happy with it just going back to displaying the game only in 3x4 with the black bars on the side honestly.

So, I know this will sound crazy, but I think I know WHAT changed my settings, I just have no idea how to change them back. This actually happend to me like 5 years ago, and I figured out how to fix it myself, but now its not working. So bear with me. 5 years ago, when I would use Chrome Remote Desktop, I had the same problem, somehow, clicking "Full Screen Mode" when I was using another computer and Remoting into this computer would change some display setting and the game would stretch the screen. I realized that if I exited "Full Screen Mode" on Chrome Remote Desktop before I closed the program, then it would not effect the ratio on my game. Now, with this new version of Chrome Remote Desktop, I fear that it has done the same thing, only when I exit full screen mode, it does not change it back. I know this sounds crazy, but it is the only thing I can think of. I tried doing a System Restore, but the stupid ass thing only goes back 10 days, obviously I've had this problem longer. I've tried uninstalling Chrome and all its files, but nothing has helped.

Okay, quick shot at seeing if you can fix this. Use asinine Chrome Remote Desktop again, login to the computer and change the resolution back to where it was. Hopefully it'll stick.

If that works, use Team Viewer for all future remoting and read my recent post on TV here.
