Froze when I was using a Word doc

Starting it back up and it just says
"Reboot and Select proper Boot device or Insert Boot Media in selected Boot device and press a key"

I'm an idiot when it comes to this. Can anyone help?

I noticed Bare Foot Kid is in the Lowcountry somewhere...I'm in Awendaw and work in N. Chas if there is any way I can meet you if I can't get this thing sorted out over the www...

It is a laptop loaned to me that already had a HD go out on it. Everything on it is mine, so I really don't need to recover anything.

Not sure how to check the hard drive with those tools. I'm on my desk top now.

As you say,PC has had one Hd go down, I believe the Motherboard is bad.
Sound like a Reinstall will not be much help.

Boot the Win7 DVD, on second screen select Repair My Computer, see if it offers a Repair.

If it doesn't start up, boot back in to Repair. Does it find an installation to Repair?

If so click through to Recov Tools list to run Startup REpair repeatedly. Report back results.

This isn't going to end well, I can see that. Only disc I have found is MS Office. I think Windows 7 was downloaded from the internet. Does that sound right? It wasn't quite out when Laptop was purchased and I think the original OS was Windows Vista.

Was Win7 a legitimate download? WHere was it downloaded from and how was it activated? Check your bank records. Go back to the site and download the ISO, which you should have kept safe along with the key as valuable property.

Try rebooting and tapping the F8 key vigorously every second to access Advanced Boot Options.
The Repair console may be on there. If so boot into it to see if it offers a Repair and accept it. If not or if WIn7 doesn't start, boot back into Repair, see if it finds an installation to Repair. If so, click through to Recovery Tools list to RUn Startup Repair repeatedly. Report back results.

If no Repair console on F8 options, try Last Known Good Config, booting into Safe Mode.

Find another Win7 computer of your same (32- or 64-) bit version to make a Repair CD in Backup Center.

Or since you may have to reinstall anyway, borrow or find a Win7 installer for your version to try repairs and clean reinstall. If you download from the web from a site like Digital Life which hosts official ISO downloads, make sure you check ISO integrity and scan with AV.

It was legit. I didn't buy the comp(I was there as it is my girlfriend's) , but may be able to find the records. I'll have to see what I can round up tomorrow.

I've tried the F8 thing but it repeats the "Reboot...." every time key is pressed.

It sounds now more like your HD is dead. I would do this next:

Try entering BIOS setup to see if it registers the HD.

Next try booting the HD maker's diagnostics/repair CD to see if it even sees the HD. If it sees it then run the extended test to see what it reports.
