Asus N56VZ Laptop not recognizing 3TB External HDD

I'm not really sure what I'm doing here.

Basically, my laptop isn't detecting a Seagate 3TB external HDD. The hard drive works with other computers, and my laptop is detecting my 1TB external hdd perfectly.

Please let me know if I should provide more info.

Hello and welcome Wasa mate as a by the by did it download it's driver when you plugged it in as they usually give you a message to say it is installing the software for a drive.

Plus if it did that have you checked in the BIOS ? or DISKPART for this drive?

Post back the machines spec model at least.

The light on the external hdd turned on for a moment and off again, and there was no reaction at all on my laptop's end. No message saying it was installing the driver or even one to say it wasn't recognized. The drive was definitely on though.

I updated my specs. Hope I did it right?

Yep specs real good you would be surprised how many post in and one doesn't know really what they are dealing with.

Anyway that drive mate the light flicking on and off like that does not sound real good.

So have you checked in DISKPART to see if it is listed. If you want to do that -
Start > type cmd in the box > right click on the blue box at the the top of the results > click on run as admin > OK you will end up with a screen in black and white > type in diskpart.> then type list disk > enter > you will get a screen like my pic. If the drive is being recognised by the system it will show it up for example like that Disk 4 in my pic - it is an SD card that drive will show up as arounf 3000GB

Open disk management and see if its listed. If it is shown, check to make sure it has a drive letter assigned. If it doesn't assign one and then see if it shows in explorer on the Computer screen.

Hum I did think of that one alpha I just thought the DISKPART would be more definite from past experience I have had that - no drive in disk management and yet the disk showing up in DISKPART.

So either way we are going to find out I suppose

Everybody has their own way of working out problems and who's to say one is any better than the other. In my book it's all good if it solves the problem.

Hum have you tried the Partition Wizard for letter assigning it is the easiest thing I have ever use I didn't mention it before as it does not always pick up a wayward drive but I suppose it is worth Wasa having a go - nothing to lose.

I've used the MiniTool in the past to do what Disk Management can't handle. That is a very useful tool. Actually I just took the drive out of the enclosure to repurpose it so the no drive letter isn't an issue now. Thanks for the recommendation anyway though.

Okay so I checked both Disk Management and diskpart and it is not listed under either.

Nothing pops up on device manager either.

OK, its not being seen/detected at all. Does this drive enclosure have an external power pack? Or does the data cable have two USB plugs on one end? It sounds like it may not be getting enough power from the laptops USB port.

I meant I am already using both the AC adapter and the USB. It says my USB ports have 500mA of available power. I can't find anything about the drive's requirements.

Sorry mate I must have misunderstood what you said I thought you meant run it only via the USB you have to have that for data anyway.

So there must be a model number on it somewhere if you can post that it would be really helpful

Seagate GoFlex Desk with 3.0 USB
I'm pretty sure the model number is STAC3000102 (I checked on the site. I don't have it with me this moment)

Ok I have had a scout around including that Seagate forum but it seems that the machine is the problem if the Go Flex works in the other machines.

Have you had a look in the Device Manager to see if there is anything there? See my pic

If it has its own power pack then it "shouldn't" be a power issue. The reason I asked is that a lot of those external enclosures don't come with power packs and will have issues especially on laptops. Have a look at what ICit2lol posted and see what that leads to.

Just so we have it right Wasa the drive is not there or it is there but no yellow symbols? Sorry mate but just cannot see why the drive is working ok on other machines and not this one.
