auto reboot when installing or uninstalling software

Hi

Though not always, but most of the times when I try to install or uninstall legal software my windows7 (see specs below) reboots as the in/uninstall process starts. I checked for viruse/trojans/malware etc with various software and they have found nothing. Trying to go to safe mode doesn't work either. On my computer this should be F8 (for boot menu). But this shows me a BIOS-like screen whereby I'm asked to choose from which Hard drive/DVD I want to boot from. The following keys, Delete, Esc, F2, F8, F10 and F12 do not take me there either. I need to do so manually via msconfig.
I had thought the problem may have been a new Antivirus software I wanted to try WebAware but it wasn't. Their diagnostic tool showed that according to my system log I had many hard drive errors. A windows checkdisk on the other hand seemed to fix nothing. There appeared to be no errors. (Is there another 100% trustworthy similar software to check and fix windows exist?). Regardless the problem continues to exist.
Any advice?

Yes: although you are not getting a blue screen crash, please follow the http://www.sevenforums.com/crashes-debugging/96879-blue-screen-death-bsod-posting-instructions.html to provide us with your system event viewer logs, system info, and error reports. Those can help determine why the system suddenly restarts during an install/uninstall of software.

You have two realtime antivirus programs installed (from the looks of it). Are you using both for antivirus and firewall, or is one only for firewall? If you have both providing antivirus protection and/or both providing firewall security, they can conflict. Both will try to utilize the same system resources or scan the same system files simultaneously causing conflicts and possibly freezing, hangs, crashes, or random restarts.

I do not recommend running a memory booster. It is bound to cause conflicts with system performance rather than enhancing it. If you need help optimizing Windows 7, please post a thread in Performance & Maintenance - Windows 7 Forums or follow the tutorial enclosed in that forum to http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorial...ws-7-a.html?filter[2]=Performance Maintenance.

Remove the memory booster and see if the problems persist.


If that does not work, I did see some conflicts with your backup software. Remove it and see if that provides better stability.

from bad to worse--am writing from my laptop.
Before I go on, and sorry this will be long, I must point something out, reason becoming obvious later on.
The problem up to the point mentioned last time was mainly during uninstallation. All other software, utilities etc worked fine.
I proceeded to uninstall stuff as suggested. One at a time up, + others not suggested, until the Windows msconfig suggestion. Each time the problem continued to exist--software was removed via the Windows un/install Fixit. I also uninstalled my NOD32 antivirus. And ran a chkdisik on the OS drive.
Once on msconfig with the selective restart suggested the problem continued to exist. Now I'm beginning to suspect, like a few years ago, that the problem is hardware. But if this were so, would it not also happen in Safe Mode? Yet safe mode showed no problems. I now install a new antivirus, Avast, and all seems OK.
I decided to take it one step further and actually uncheck all Windows Services and Startups. Reboot. Ok I seem to now be able to uninstall software without a crash-auto self reboot). Can we then assume it is a Windows service or start up that is causing the problem?
I then begin with blocks at a time (1st 5 then many more) to recheck the windows services and other startups. All keeps on being fine--no crash. I reach almost to the end with no problem uninstalling a program (I kept on uninstalling and reinstalling the same softeware over and over again). I reach towards the end. (all startups are on since a few reboots ago on) The following are checked back 1-Virtual disk, 2-Volume Shadow Copy, 3-Blocklevel backup, 4-Windows Activation Technology service, 5-Windows Biometric Service, 6-Windows Connect Now Config Service, 7-Windows Color system, 8-Diagnostic Service Host, 9-Diagnostic System Host, 10-Web Client, 11-Windows Event Collector, 12-Problems Reports & Solutions Control Panel, 13-Windows Error Reporting Service, 14-WinHTTP WEb Proxy AutoDiscovery Service 15-Windows Management Instrumentation 16-Windows Remote Management (WS-Management)17-WLan Auto Config 18-Windows Live ID sign-in Assistant 19-WMI Performance Adapter
Now it crashes. OK then problem should be one or more of these 18 windows services. I uncheck (14 to 19) problem still exists. This leaves the problem to the remaining 12. I recheck the last 6 (since it's not them) and uncheck 8 to 13 again problem still exists. I uncheck 5 to 7. Problems continues. then 4, then 3, then 2, then 1. OK waoot a minute. Why does the problem still excist since a few reboots ago without these same 18 it all worked fine. And here is where things go worse. With me now doing nothing, after about 20 seconds that the computer is rebooted the computer recrashes. No unistallation or anything else was done. I go on safe mode and wait and all is ok. I go back to normal boot and after a few seconds of nothing (just moving desktop icons around) it crashes. This happens a few times--always crashing with nothing being done within seconds and always no problem (by doing nothing and waiting) on safe mode. I then proceed to start again with removing all windows services. All is OK again no self crash (no attempt at uninstallation is now being done).
I then start all over again removing this time a few services at a time (B4 i had removed all of them). I remove 1-Adobe Updater, 2-Adobe CS5 service Messenger -3 Akami Net Session, 4-Microsoft Windows OS. Problem still exists (but not on safe mode) I remove (uncheck) 5-Application Experience 6- Application Layer Gateway Service 7-Application Identity 8- ASP.Net State Service. Problem still exists (but not on safe mode) I remove 9- Windows Audio Endpoint 11-Active X Installer 12-Bitlocker Drive Encryption Service 13-base Filtering Engine 14-background Intelligence Transfer 15-Computer Browser 16-Bluetooth support service 17-Certificate propagat 18-Microsoft net framework...x86 19-Microsoft net framework...x64 -20-Comodo internet Security Help Service. ALL is ok no crash for quite a while. I wrote this report up to this point with no auto reboot.
This now begs the question: Is it then a service after all or is it a combination? But the services now off, were on before and did not show the same problem so... it seems now that maybe just maybe it's combination of a group of services (MY computer can't handle a given amount of services at the same time regardless of which services they happen to be?) So it could handle for example no more than 32 services. This goes on for a while with no good results now telling me that perhaps it is hardware after all or 1/2 possible since on reboot there is only one beep as opposed to more when there is a hardware issue. Or perhaps it's a driver problem. Time to check the hardware. Will get back to u with further news.

Ok on to phase 2: removed CD player, problem still there.
reput cd player, removed dvd player, problem still there.
removed 1st RAM card (3G X 4cards), problem still there.
did the same for the next 3 cards, problem still there.
Removed 1 of 3 hard drives. Problem not there.Could it be? I wait and see. I play a solitaire game 1X, 2X and still nothing. Should I celebrate? I now go back to msconfig and set everything to normal. Problem is back--crash/auto reboot within seconds.
So is it or isn't it hardware? Back to msconfig service, and uncheck everything. I now go back to boot and all fine. Reboot. Play solitaire for about 10 minutes and no crash. Back to rechecking a few at a time. after rechecking 15 then reboot n all's fine, Now recheck 17, all's fine. recheck 18 n all's fine. reboot. I now recheck the following: Link Layer Topology, KTMrM for Distribution Transaction, CNG Key Isolation, Microosoft IME Dictionary, Windows Cardspace, Install driver table manager, windows presentation fopundation font, windows font cache service, fax, Windowsmedia center receiver, windows media center scheduler, disk defragmenter, Bluetooth support service, active x controller, bitlocker drive encryptor, base filtering engine, windows audio, windows audio endpoint. on reboot, after a few seconds it crashes again. Note that there is no pattern from previous abled and disabled services. the one difference now is that there is 1 less HD connected (in connection with these services). Is the problem now hardware + too many services for windows to handle? Is it drivers, or drivers in connection with either services or my HD, since we havent tested these yet?
Ok now uncheck some of these last services again and see what happens. I uncheck the 1st 5 n it still crashes. proceed to uncheck another 6 and no more crash (bluetooth support service, Active x installer, bitlocker drive encrypt, base fiktering engine, windows audio and windows audio endpoint remain checked). All is fine--haven't tried uninstalling software at this point for it seems to defeat the purpose now anyways. I decide to add 3 startups, comodo,vast and skype, and 2 services comodo and avast, reboot and all is still fine. I risk more auto starts, this time another avast antivirus, HD audio CPL, Arcsoft, MS Office IME (I have 2 identical copies here, is this normal??) and USB 3.0 monitor. NO GO it crashes again.
Back to safe mode: uncheck once again the 2 copies of 'MS office IME' and uncheck 'Arcsoft'. reboot. it crashes. back to safe mode and uncheck HD Audio CPL and USB 3.0. reboot n crashes. back to safe mode n uncheck Avast antivirus thus meaning i'm a few reboots ago again and should work fine once more since it did afterall work as such at that stage. BUT i was wrong once again. why did it work b4 and not now? I unchecked a 7 more services and still no go. Then 2 more, then 2 more then 4 more and still nothing. Theoretically, according to my trials history it should not crash at this point but it does. My conclusion at this point is that I have no conclusion except for one thing. I can not seem to find a pattern. Trial ABC works one minute and then doesn't the next. Trial XYZ works one minute and then doesn't.
what do u suggest now?

1 day later. I turn my computer on and wait for it to crash but it does not. I go back to msconfig and place everything back to normal - 5 minutes later still no crash. Does this mean that the problem has something to do with heat? Checking the fans, something I had done early on anyways, shows them all working fine--power supply fan, CPU fan and Computer box fan all spinning nicely. I can not see any other fans on my motherboard as I had on my previous MB. Any suggestions?

It could be Windows is not working properly. I recommend that you check Windows for corruption. Run http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/1538-sfc-scannow-command-system-file-checker.html up to three times to fix all errors with a restart in between each. Post back if it continues to show errors after a fourth run or if the first run comes back with no integrity violations. Use OPTION THREE of http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/1538-sfc-scannow-command-system-file-checker.html to provide us with the sfcdetails.txt file if errors occur.

Hi once again thanks - you're a god-send
Here's an update - on my last note I had said that no crash happened for 1/2 of use. This meant no self-auto restart and this mean without trying to uninstall anything. At that point, a little after 1/2 hr and having written the previous help I tried to uninstall something again and boom--crash-- self auto reboot. Once it rebooted it went on a loop again meaning after a few seconds of doing nothing it would just reboot. I turned off my PC to let it cool down for about an hour. I turned on my PC in safe mode--all seemed OK. I rebooted normally and all was OK again. This time I used my PC (without trying to uninstall anything) for about 8 consecutive hours without any problems. Obviously it doesn't like uninstalling anything.
B4 this last crash I did run again 'Windows_NT6_BSOD_jcgriff2.exe' as u had suggested earlier and have attached it here so u can see, if there is anything new after all those uninstallations you had recommended and all the multiple continuous crashes. I have attached it here.
OK now to your last suggestion I did run ' SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker" but I absolutely nothing happened. Why do I say so? As you can see from the attached screen shot of the cmd, all it seem to have listed is something similar to a help file -- definitions of commands only, and nothing else. The saved text file, as further evidence of this, was completely empty --yes empty -- I have attached it nevertheless. And yes I have done what was said, "In the elevated command prompt, type sfc /scannow and press Enter." [I also tried sfc /scanfile=c:]
I have attached the CBS.log file as well but it is not of today. None today was made. the date on it is from yesterday. Obviously either the command I keyed in is no longer a valid one with my Windows 7 home Premium 64bit. Or something is preventing the command to run the way it is supposed to.

Alright, I am beginning to suspect a hardware issue due to the 8 hours straight after letting it stay off for a while. Run some hardware checks.

• If you are overclocking any hardware, please stop.
  
  
• Monitor temperatures during the following tests.
  
  Use the following programs to monitor the temperatures.​
  • Real Temp is a good CPU temperature monitor.
  • Speccy - System Information - Free Download will monitor all hardware temperatures.
  • HWiNFO, HWiNFO32 & HWiNFO64 - Hardware Information and Analysis Tools can be inaccurate for CPU temperatures, but is a good program for GPU temperature monitoring.
  • Use FurMark: VGA Stress Test, Graphics Card and GPU Stability Test, Burn-in Test, OpenGL Benchmark and GPU Temperature | oZone3D.Net to test the graphics card GPU. Let it run until the GPU temperatures even out or until the GPU temperatures reach a dangerous level (you can find the max temperature for your card on either the nVidia or AMD sites; if you are not sure, ask us). The goal is to get a steady temperature, find out if the GPU is overheating, or to see if there are any artifacts present in the test itself: look for strange pixelated patterns on the screen or colors that do not look like they belong. Then use the |MG| Video Memory Stress Test 1.7.116 Download to test your graphics card memory. Let the memory test run for at least seven passes; the more the better.
    
    
  • Run http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/100352-hardware-stress-test-prime95.html to determine any hardware problems. Run all three tests for a few hours each. If you get errors, stop the test and post back here.
    
    
  • Follow the steps for doing CPU stress test using IntelBurnTest
  
  
• Run the boot version of Memtest86+ paying close attention to Parts 2 and 3 of the tutorial. Also, in case Memtest86+ misses anything and comes up with no errors, run the extended version of the Windows Memory Diagnostics Tool for at least five passes. These you may want to run overnight since they take a long time to complete (run them an hour before bed each of the next two nights and check before going to sleep that they are still running).

  1. Shut down and turn off your computer.
  2. Unplug all power supplies to the computer (AC Power then battery for laptops, AC power for desktops)
  3. Hold down the power button for 30 seconds to close the circuit and ensure all power drains from components.
  4. Make sure you are grounded by using proper grounding techniques, i.e. work on an anti-static workbench, anti-static desk, or an anti-static pad. Hold something metallic while touching it to the anti-static surface, or use an anti-static wristband to attach to the anti-static material while working. If you do not have an anti-static workbench, desk, or pad, you can use your computer tower/case by finding a metal hold in it, such as a drive bay.
  Once these steps have been followed, it is safe to remove and replace components within your computer.

BTW: BIOS was never touched by me in any way, it is like when bought, as far as I know no overclocking was done.
I was only able to do the above 'cause I don't know what my graphics card max temperature is supposed to be (you said I can ask you if i didn't know)-- could not find it or did not know how to on AMD site nor on a Google search. Also my exact model number wasn't there (on AMD site) under specs documentation

My card is ATI/AMD Radeon HD5770 (Juniper xy) MSI 35770 (MS- V214)

Maximum temperature for that card is 105 C, but do not let it get above 95 C.

Before I go on with the tests results there is something that I should add not mentioned before: You know when in a large city at night you cross a major intersection and there is a quick split second flash from a traffic camera. Well the exact thing happens to my monitor except much faster that it’s barely noticeable. The monitor is about 5 months old. And for the 1st 4 months I used it with a laptop so I never noticed this until it went on my PC. If this has any relation to my uninstall crash problem I don’t know but I thought I should mention it. (was gonna ask about this problem on another posting but thought this crash thing should be done first).

Oops forgot to mention: No, there were no crashes during the 1st series of tests and during these 2nd series. (it appears so far that crashes only happen during uninstallation). So far, in my view I get this gut feeling that if it is hardware it'll be with the Hard Drives, 2nd guess would be motherboard but I doubt it.)

All looks good; temperatures are excellent. You could run the video memory tests again to be sure, but we can worry about that another time if you prefer not to. Any artifacts in the video during the FurMark tests?


Not sure if the monitor issue is related. You could test by connecting the computer to another monitor or to your TV and see if you still get the same problems.


Let's check your memory settings and compatibility.

• Download and install CPU-Z and Upload screenshots of the CPU, Mainboard, Memory, and SPD tabs. In the SPD tab, upload an image of each slot.
  
  Also, go into your BIOS and post all Voltages (CPU, RAM, NB, IMC, etc.) and all RAM settings (timings, frequency, etc.)

About Prime95: You write, "Run all three tests". What 3 tests? Well, obviously I do not know what I'm doing here, even after having read stuff on their readme.text file and web page. When program is run it gives me 2 choices -- manual or thru gimp. I tried the manual one and then quit it thinking it didnt give me the 3 choices. I then had to delete the whole folder since running Prime95 would auto start on manual. I then went via their other choice. And of it went doing its work but I do not see 3 choices. Anyhow, I'll let you know the results once it finishes whatever it is that it is presently doing on its own. ----- UPDATE TO THE ABOVE --sorry had not read instructions set by your link properly--will follow what it says now "Select "Just Stress Testing" ; etc. . --- BTW I had already run this test before. I had installed an anti virus software. When I noticed the crash. I thought this software may have been the cause. I wrote to their tech dept. They asked me to run this test (and another one).
What he wrote is, "After looking over the logs I found that you have a lot of hard drive errors which most likely are the cause of the crashes you are witnessing. I found 1 instance of NTFS error and 737 instances of disk errors and/or bad sectors in the system event logs, last one 2012-05-16."
He suggested I run the windows 'disk examination and repair utility' which I did -- prior to me writing to you. They did not help further.

Did the Prime95 test (results attached). Seems like nothing was found. Started at 12:52 stopped at 16:39. This makes it total run/resting for about 4 1/2 hours.
At 15:12 I checked in --> Advanced --> "round off Checking". AT 15:17 Checked of "SUM(inputs) error checking as well. AT 3:25 unchecked the 1st. I was not aware that this above meant whatever it was doing would stop and start anew with my new test.
Here's the thing re the test: It seemed to be running fine but When I clicked on 'Test' --> 'Status' it said, "Below is a report...." [Worker thread # 1] No work queued up. and the same for the other 3 threads. This refers me not doing it manually hence this is normal, right? I have cut and paste the notes from 'Worker and thread #1 to 4.
Also according to your other comment I should have done "CPU stress test using IntelBurnTest ' and " boot version of Memtest86+ " . However u just now asked me to do something else. I'm assuming these 2 we'll hold until another time and therefore will do the new tests you suggest for now.

The new requests are not tests and are just for informational purposes.

I take it the results you sent are for the small FFTs test? Run the in place large FFTs and the Blend tests, as well. That will encompass the three I mentioned previously. Report your temperatures at idle (when you have not run a test for more than 15 minutes and no intensive programs/games have run for at least 15 minutes), and also report your temperatures during the tests after 10 minutes time.


I would still recommend the Memtest86+ diagnostics and IntelBurn Test when you are able to run them.
