Give it a good workout to see if it differs any with the factory chipset.

Your checklist should be the Device Manager - are there any missing devices?

Use Win7 installer and Updates drivers unless performance dictates changing them.

As to 'Puran defrag' I did so because the link you gave me regarding the re-installation of windows said so. Thanks for ur command line way of doing so.

Both the Puran defrag method and the command line defrag method are fine. I just spoke with gregrocker about it. I did not want to recommend it without knowing more about it first. He says he has never had problems with it nor seen others have problems, and he is one of our top Windows optimization experts. I trust his judgment.

Because of my printer I had to install yesterday the USB 3.0 drivers. From the Asus site and under 'USB" it gave me NEC_USB3_V10190_XpVistaWin7. Today, in reading your post, I installed the chipset drivers: Intel_Chipset_V9111020_XPVistaWin7. This I saw as it was installing actually included many drivers for different things. In reading your post again however, I then realized that perhaps you meant only the USB drivers and nothing else.--if so, Oops. Anyhow, also from the asus website what remains is:

Your drivers are all clean now. Probably no need to install anything unless you are having any problems with any devices. You can install the Realtek LAN drivers if you want to; they won't hurt anything if they are up to date, and it will keep Windows Update from annoying you. The driver from ASUS is probably best. I usually recommend drivers from the motherboard support site over Windows drivers, although in this case, I imagine they are the same drivers.

Don't take that to mean all manufacturer drivers take precedence over Windows Update drivers, though. I have an ATI graphics card that the more up to date drivers cause issues, and the one Windows recommends works better because it is an older card. For motherboard drivers, it is best to get them from the motherboard's manufacturer support site if you can.


On that note, what audio drivers do you have installed? Any issues with your audio? I know the generic audio drivers for my laptop cause a popping sound during Windows startup that makes me nervous it will damage my speakers, so I always install the Realtek audio drivers (yours are VIA, mine are Realtek) as soon as possible.

If you are not having any audio issues, do not install the drivers yet. We want to install as little at a time as possible to see how the system performs after each set.

OK i will install the lan drivers by ASUS and not by windows. As to the audio drivers, the ones I have are what Win7 placed. Am I having any issues? none what-so-ever but I think, maybe, just maybe the sound was a little better before.
So for now, besides the above lan I will also install the viewsonic display drivers from windows which is for my monitor. but nothing else.
For now I will not install:

hiya boys--had a nice holiday I hope. OK I was told to install things slowly and s - l - o -w - l - y I did. Here's my update. I installed and only installed legal software. I also only installed well-known software with a known reputation--no demos, no betas etc. I also installed less stuff than last time. Since then, 2 months ago all has been going smooth except for one thing. After the re-installation of windows I recall doing my first search and in asking to catalog the search I chose not to. Whether is due to this or not the only odd behavior of my PC since then is its speed when I choose to do anything that is ion a different drive. For ex. I am working on a Word document. (Word and all software was installed in C I then click on my D: drive. I have to wait 5 seconds or so for it to open and show anything. I can also hear the drive start spinning as if it were sleeping before. This very slow behavior is nothing I experienced b4 with this PC. Any clues?
And then in the last 10 days or so I installed a few things within days of each other: Adobe university suite and along with it some Photoshop plugins and related software., CCleaner and a game. Yesterday when trying to update via the windows update page windows defender definitions it crashed. I tried 2X the same thing. Since this crash I installed some antivirus/malaware stuff with no problems. Uninstalling the game created a crash as well. Any opinions now?

What speed are the HD's?

Install CrystalDiskInfo Software to get SMART readings on each HD.

Uninstall your AV and install Microsoft Security Essentials which should shut off Defender. If not turn it off in services.msc.

window in/uninstall crash issues

Since with the slow installation of software and drivers up until recently all went well I, logic would narrow it down to whatever was done in the last few days. My idea then is this--yet again do a clean reinstall and stop at where I was a few days ago. one thing I will not do is use CCleaner just in case that may be the culprit. I will install nothing further except for my Adobe suite and only 1/2 of the Photoshop stuff i had installed. At that point I will sit and wait, as I have now. If something does happen I will then assume 1 of 3 things--1-my PC can't handle past a certain amount of installed apps-2-the problem lies with the Photoshop plugins/ extra software -3-hardware issues
Having said that I went to the link provided here months ago for the clean install Windows ISO image (from Digital River) and it is 13 months old. Is there not anything newer?
BTW attached are the CrystalDiskInfo5_0_4Shizuku-en files created via windows Snipping tool since i could not see how to save the info differently.

Confirm you have 12gb RAM detected at Control Panel>System. If so this could be a problem with mismatch if you upgraded earlier, or even a bad stick. Test your RAM - Test with Memtest86+ following the steps to test both sticks and slots.

Rather than reinstalling you should be able to get before the problem started using System Restore

Memtest86 was used before, (see page 4 here) and all was ok except for a CPU overheating (long story omitted for now). So the memory sticks and slots were all OK.
As to using restore I have and things are better but not perfect. I restored but only to a certain point, even though there were earlier points. Going any earlier then that well, I'd rather just start over with a clean slate there eliminating as many doubts as possible. I consider this to be a life lesson to me, so once I get this all over with I will NOT repeat the same mistakes again, and if not my fault, then will be more ready and better informed as to what to do--this of course is, in large part, all thanks you both gregrocker and writhziden. I am truly grateful beyond words.
So, as mentioned, is there a newer version of the win 7 ISO for me to download?

Not than that in Windows 7 SP1 ISO from Digital River « My Digital Life.

You need all Important and Optional Updates as well. They should soon be rolled up in SP2, hopefully along with some of the explorer improvements in Win8.

the digital life link u gave is the digital river one I was referring to and it dates: Aug 10, 2011. This date is shown directly above the subject heading to the left of it. I'm assuming therefore that based on this date the files too are from then or before. Is this my only choice then? Is there any way to verify based on the file name, (X17-58997.iso, in my case) as to how old it may be. As to the SP2, any idea as to when this would be? and once this is out does this mean a new ISO would be available as well (at the same time or thereabouts)?

Yes, we are all waiting for SP2 which is expected after Win8 release. The day it is released in beta will be a big day around here.

We should have heard if there is a more recent ISO version than the one we link which has both SP1 and a media refresh and is the official Win7 ISO download..

Bit late to the game here, but I just thought I'd let you know that I'm having the exact same issues as mentioned in this thread, and, perhaps worthy of note, share a very similar system to the one mentioned in the first post:

OS: Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit
Mainboard: Asus P7P55D-E LX
Bios: American Megatrends Inc.
Processor: Intel Core i5 760 @ 2800MHz
Video Card: Asus ATI Radeon HD 5770

Any chance of getting an update on how things are at the moment? I've been sitting on this problem for a month now, and this is the closest I've ever seen to a solution to the problem. Even my local PC repair shop gave up on it.

I'm about two weeks away from purchasing new parts and giving up on my old machine. If that's the case, could anyone give me an indication as to which parts I won't need to replace (my guess is my RAM and PSU are in working order, for example).

Any help would be much appreciated.
