AutoPlay Issues

Hello Everyone,

While searching for help with a different issue I came across some problems with AutoPlay.
From what I currently understand the AutoPlay default settings is to popup for any media formats which include
CD, DVD, Any USB storage device as well as any "Non-Volume device" such as a digital camera. I have noticed some issues where AutoPlay does not seem to be doing what I would expect it to do.

QUESTIONS
1.) When I plug in a digital camera into my computer the AutoPlay does not popup at all, which I am not sure why?

2.) Non-Volume devices are devices such as a digital camera that when plugged in Windows does not assign a drive letter to it. What about a device such as an iPod Classic? Windows assigns a drive letter to it in Windows Explorer, such is an iPod considered a Volume device or a Non-Volume device?

3.) In the AutoPlay setup window at the bottom there is a category called "Devices" and in that category it says
"Devices that you connect to your computer will be listed here"
If I plug in a digital camera it does not show up under this Device category.
If I plug in a iPod Classic it does not show up under this Device category.
Are these items supposed to show up here? If they are supposed to, any ideas why mine wouldn't be?

4.) As seen in the link below, you can apparently turn off AutoPlay for just the "Non-Volume Devices"

When I attempt to turn off autoplay and reboot, then I plug in the iPod Classic the autoplay popup still shows up so this makes me think that it is not a non-volume device? If it is a non-volume device why would it continue to show up if I ran the regedit to turn it off?

5.) If anyone knows of a way to launch a specific program, when a specific USB device is plugged in.
For example, a way to plug in a iPod Classic and have Windows launch Winamp automatically, please visit my thread found here if you feel like sharing this info.

This is more for CD & other optical drive, as not for others.

If you want to "auto play" then in that drive, look for files ending with .exe or .bat or .ini

Most auto play will show you a list of applications, such as Open Folder/drive, and others.

Autoplay can be tricky for cameras. I know that my camera (and my cellphone) have to be set to "PC Connect" or USB mode in order for autoplay to pick it up. Otherwise, it's like it does not exist when plugged in. Perhaps its just a simple problem of setting your device into a mode that the PC will accept. That's the way it is with me, anyway.

As for the iPod... iPods are a different beast and have a driver loaded with iTunes that automatically bypasses autoplay (in most cases) and loads iTunes instead, as soon as it detects the iPod being plugged in. I believe that the iPod is a volume device, it's just handled differently from most standard removable volumes.

Now, for having a plugged in item automatically start a program... That would take a little programming skill on your part. You would have to intercept the command going to Autoplay, and send it somewhere else, much like iTunes does. That might be an interesting utility to create, but if you don't have programming skills, perhaps you know a friend who does. I know of no third party app that does it.

Hey Guys, thank you for the responses

It seems that AutoPlay does have its purposes, but I guess it really isn't what I am looking for, it doesn't really work like I thought it would, so I think I will just disable it.

Yeah I did not come across any applications either that would allow me to automatically launch a program when a usb device is detected such as an iPod. Odd because it seems like more people would have had a use for this other than just me.
I unfortunately don't have the programming skills for this myself.
A forum user on my other thread mentioned that I would have to create an autoexec file, would this be the way to go?
Would creating an autoexec file require a great deal of programming knowledge?
I looked into autorun.inf but that seems to only be for opening up programs on the usb device.
