AVG FREE 2011 Installation Failure

I've been using AVG FREE edition AV ...forever. For a free AV it has worked to expectations and most importantly it is familiar to me.

Recently I have been getting the notifications to upgrade AVG from v9 to v2011. So I did.

The install went smoothly. Booted into Windows and AVG is running in the taskbar - no prob. But, open AVG and all the AV modules are inactive. Several different attempts to activate the modules were unsuccessful, including the "Fix All" option.

I am now back running v9.
Has anyone else experienced this? Know what went wrong?

Additional Info:

• I did not uninstall v9 before installing v2011. I let the installer do that.
• I install AVG on my D: drive*, not C: with the OS. This has not been an issue before.
• I do not recall doing anything manually to enter the Free license number anywhere during the install. I seem to recall this being already entered in the box so I moved on.

If you are installing AVG 2011 Free Edition and the installation process fails, there are several steps you can take to install AVG Free successfully.

1. Make sure you are installing AVG under an account with Administrative rights
This step is vital for correct and successful installation, since AVG needs to copy some of its files into folders, which are not accessible by an account with User permissions. For information on how to check whether you are logged into Windows as a user with administrative rights, please refer to this FAQ topic.
2. Always use the latest AVG installation file
AVG program is being improved continuously, including the installer which is responsible for correct installation process. Moreover, using the latest installation package eliminates the need to download larger program and virus base updates immediately after installation. To download the up-to-date installation file, please visit the Download section of our website.
3. Close all running programs, disable security applications
Before running the installation file, please close all unnecessary running programs and make sure that there is no security application on your computer which might interfere with the installation process. Typical examples of programs preventing successful AVG installation are anti-spyware utilities and registry monitors/cleaners, which are preventing access to Windows registry. AVG needs to be installed also into registry to allow the functionality and protection it was designed to offer.
4. Remove possible conflicting applications
If you are using an application which might be in conflict with AVG, please disable it or uninstall it completely before running the installation. In general, AVG may conflict with such application, that provides similar or same functionality as one of the AVG components. This is especially important for other programs with one or more of these features:​

• real-time protection against viruses (same as AVG Resident Shield)
• checking or filtering of e-mails (same or similar to AVG E-mail Scanner)

5. Disable UAC (Windows Vista only)

On Windows Vista, the function User Account Control may in some cases create a copy of specific AVG files in a virtual folder. This limits AVG functionallity after the installation. The UAC function can be disabled in Windows Control Panel -> User accounts -> Turn User Account Control on or off -> uncheck "Use User Account Control (UAC) to help protect your computer" -> click OK button and restart the computer.

If AVG installation fails and the C: drive is not present in the computer, it is possible to solve this situation by assigning the C: letter to any disk, for example to a USB flash drive. The letter can be assigned to the USB flash drive as follows:

1. Plug a USB flash drive to your computer.
2. Navigate to the Computer Management:
   • on your Desktop or in the Start menu, right click Computer (or My computer), and click Manage
   • or open Start -> Run or Search -> type compmgmt.msc -> OK
3. In the left pane, click Disk Management.
4. Right-click the the USB flash drive, and then click Change Drive Letter and Paths.
5. Click Change.
6. Select Assign the following drive letter, click the letter C, and then click OK.
7. Click Yes when you are prompted to confirm the drive letter change.

Thank you gentlemen.

I planned on doing an thorough uninstall prior to my next attempt - I will probably use the AVG 64 bit uninstaller from their website.

I had read the page you linked Bill2, along with all the others at AVG concerning installation of 2011. Disabling UAC is a good idea. There is also a more recent version available and I would certainly use that download.

But if it gives me any more grief I'm thinking of moving on to Avast or MSE.
I've not been too happy with AVG's nag-ertisements on their free edition anyway.

An Update. Today I had time to try another install. This one went well.

Changes from last install (nothing special):

• Manually uninstalled AVG9 from option in the Start Menu AVG folder.
• Manually cleaned up leftover folders.
• New Download version 1153_cnet (old: 1136_upgrade).
• Ran download as Administrator.

So, either a fluke bad install (happens), or a repaired download file, or it is important to "clean install", or "Run as Admin" helps.
