Problem: Windows Backup and Restore does not work. When the link is clicked, nothing happens.

Background: At one point Acronis True Image Home was installed. The uninstaller left behind an entry in key HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{B98A2BEA-7D42-4558-8BD1-832F41BAC6FD} that continues to point to Acronis True Image Home.

My research indicates that this is an issue known to Acronis. They have made a "fix" available which is supposed to restore Windws 7 Backup and Restore functionality. The "fix" is a registry entry "ResourceDLL.reg" which is to be merged into the registry.

However. when merger is attempted the message "Cannot import ...... Some keys are open by the system or other processes" is displayed.

I have tried starting the computer is Safe Mode but the same message is displayed.

I have tried to manually make the change via regedit but get the message "Cannot edit Rescorce.DLL. Error writing the value's new contents.

Ownership and permissions for the key have been changed.

These have had no effect - the same message is shown when merger/editing is attempted.

It would appear that the change must be entered before Windows 7 starts but I have been unable to find a way to do that.

Looking for assistance in getting the Acronis "fix" implemented.

Thx,
C.

ALSO -FYI! I saw the previous post about this issue, but the solution posted does not work on my machine even after making the ownership and permissions changes suggested.

If the SFC doesn't fix it then you could see if CCleaner may help with that registry entry.
Of course use the CCleaner registry tool with caution and accept their registry backup option before deleting entries.

You could also use sysinternals Autoruns.exe to see if there is a startup attempt for an Acronis dll or exe. If so then untick it. Note that this utility goes way beyond what you see in msconfig.

Many thanks for the suggestions! --- results

From Marsmimar: "Your computer might have damaged or corrupt system files. I'd try running a system file checker scan from an elevated command prompt (option two.) If problems are found, run the scan 3 times and immediately reboot the computer after each scan." Ran SFC as suggested - SUCCESS!!

The Acronis "fix" has been merged into the registry and Windows Backup and Restore is once again functional.

Again thanks for the help.
