Hello. I would like to ask if backup from Windows Home can be restored on Windows Ultimate. I have bought a notebook recertly and it had come with preinstalled Windows Home. I have only backed it up and removed it because I wanted to have Linux on it. However I realised that my notebook doesn't go very well with Linux mostly becase 2 graphic cards (nvidia and intel) cause lot of problems when they are together and I don't have skill nor patience to continue trying to fix it so I have decided that I'll go back to Windows and I may just as well install Windows Ultimate x64 I have, however I dont know if my backup will work especially because now I cannot tell if Windows Home I backed up was 32 or 64 bit if it matters.

Welcome To SevenForums.

Theog has shown you how to prepare your computer for a fresh install of Win7.

An "upgrade" from 32 to 64 is not possible. You can install 64 bit but not on top of 32 bit.

You can install 64 bit and then extract data that was backed up with the Win 7 backup.

You do realize one license = 1 machine. You can not have the the same licensed version on two different computers simultaneously.

@theog
I was intending to just format whole disc anew. Would that be enough or does that CLEAN ALL command do something that plain format does not? (Im using gparted from live USB)

@karlsnooks
Thanks. Yes I do know that. Also I found out that preinstalled copy of Windows Home was also 64 bit. Now I only need to know if backup from Home can be restored on Ultimate version.

If you only format, you will leave Linux code on the HD Drive, which will make Windows install play up.
If you would like the install to go first time, use the CLEAN ALL command.
