Backup - how much space does it really need?

This is driving me nuts.

I am trying to back up my Windows7 machine onto another PC on the same workgroup I am getting:
"Check back disk space (Important)
The disk that your back is saved on doesnt have enough free space"

But how much space does it need?
I may be incorrect but as far as I can see the backup only requires about 750MB.
Whereas the other computer has about 30GB!

15% of your hard drive, 30 GB minimum is suggested

It would seem that the space required would depend on how long you retain previous backups, how often that you make them, and the type of backup chosen. Therefore, the actual size required depends on the sum all of the above.
