I have an Acer Aspire AS5251 laptop. I was in "Backup & Restore", running Backup. I went to bed after inserting the sixth backup disk. I woke up this morning and I had to login. So, after that, I noticed a popup window with a message saying that my windows update had occured overnight and my computer had restarted. There was also a Windows Backup Error Window indicating that my backup did not complete successfully.
Question is, how do I get the backup to continue and not have to start from scratch. Any help would be gratefully appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
Graham

This sounds like the type of thing not many folks would have experience with. All I could suggest is to restart Windows Backup and put in the last DVD or a new one and see what happens.

Did you think the 6th DVD would be the last one?

Gray,
Welcome to Sevenforums.

It's water under the bridge, but:

net stop “windows update”
stops windows update service for this session
net start “windows update”
starts the windows update service for this session

In other words, turn off windows update/turn on windows update.

Those commands must be run from an elevated command prompt.
Go To an Elevated Command Prompt

Elevated command prompt = Run CMD.EXE as administrator

WIN | type CMD.EXE | do not hit Enter |
in the PROGRAMS list, right-click on CMD.EXE |
choose "Run as administrator" |

Click on the YES button (if such appears)

WIN key = key with Microsoft log on top

for the guru:
WIN | type CMD.EXE | CTRL+SHIFT+ENTER key combo | ALT+Y keycombo

Oh yes, I do recommend using an external USB drive for backups.

Thanks for the reply Saltgrass & Karlsnook,
Saltgrass, I was only about 52% in the backup, half to go. I did a full backup. I'll try restarting backup with the last disk.
Karlsnooks, For sure I'll stop the update this time and if Saltgrass' idea doesn't work, I'll use your method. I was also thinking of going to the USB mass data storage media.
Thanks for both ideas. I'll let you know if either works for me.

I would not save Win7 backup image to disks at all. You need an external HD.

I would not save Win7 folder/file backup to disks either. It is a cumbersome utility that is best avoided to simply drag the latest User folders to external. I sync mine to the cloud using Skydrive which offers 7gb free storage for each Windows Live ID: Sync Any Folder to Your SkyDrive Account | PCWorld

Thanks Greg,
You were reading my mind. Recently bought a Data Transfer Enclosue. My Mom's(bless her soul) Oell D600 wasn't working because the motherboard was cracked. I transferred all her data files using the enclosure.
So, basically I've got an external USB Mass Storage Device w/40gigs at my disposal. It'll be so much faster than using the DVD device.
Thanx for the response.
Cheers.
