Battery Drain while powered off ?

My new HP Dm3T laptop is great, except that when I turn it off at night, the next day I notice significant battery drain, just from being off overnight.

For example, it was at 100 % charge this past friday night. Then on saturday around 1pm when I turned it on, it had about 91% charge. This was not even a 24 hour time period.

The laptop has windows 7 home premium, and i have heard about some timers that wake up the laptop to scan for viruses and what not.

Does anyone know why my battery would drain like this ?

P.S. I have been using macs for the past few years, and I am re-learning all of my PC knowledge.

Yeah, that happens with any battery, even the car battery. I always disconnect the battery (or take it out) if the car or laptop are not being used for an extended period of time (e.g. more than 2 weeks). Else it will end up dead.

just to add to the advice whs gave you , i would take the lappy back to where you bought it from because 9% overnight drainage appears to me ,to be excessive

I agree that 9% is excessive, but read this and make sure that you are using proper manintenance.

i have not done the suggested cycles (full drain and charge several times) yet since I just received it on friday. I will do the cycles, then re post here if the problem continues. thanks !

That is vital, or the useful life of the battery will be diminished and you will have to buy a new one, before you are ready.

Yes it is recommended...don't forget to unplug the computer from based wall plug and not the notebook plug when you have to...it does let the time the AC Adapter to get discharge, and plug on wall before re-plug the computer.

Sometimes when resume from standby mine does says 98%, then i unplug and let battery drain a certain amount then plug it again...and everything goes to normal after for a week or so...

my laptop an I9400 is a power hungry beast , but after 2 days of no use it will still retain 100% battery life and to be honest i dont cycle the battery so i suppose ,as in life there are good and bad ,but for a four day old laptop to drain that much overnight i would suspect a faulty battery

I read that some new lithium batteries (like the one in my hp dm3t) are shipped with no charge, but upon first use, they "charge" very quickly, displaying 100% battery life after only an hour or so. The first time I charged this, it went from approx 40 to 100 % in about an hour, in my opinion that is no where near enough time to charge fully.

As i stated before, I will perform the battery cycle conditioning, by discharging it and letting it charge overnight and I will repost back here. I dont think that the battery is faulty. I started working earlier today at 84%, and now, 4 hours later, it still has 50 % remaining. Thats pretty good battery life if you ask me.

One simple test to check if the overnight battery drain is related to the actual software/laptop

Fully charge the laptop and once it reaches full charge shut down and remove the battery - leave overnight and check what the charge is after rebooting.

If the loss is the same when the battery is disconnected then it is an obvious battery fault.

If the battery only loses charge when attached to the laptop it is laptop related - there can be many causes - but at least you would know more

I followed all of the tips that you guys posted, I cycled my battery three times, fully charging and discharging it. After fully charging it, I took the battery out overnight, and in the morning when I turned it on, there was NO battery drainage !!!!

Success!!

Thanks for all the help, I will verify that there are no problems by charging it, and leaving the battery in while the laptop is off tonight.
